IMPORTING AN ORIGINAL UK CAR FROM SPAIN BACK INTO UK.
I HAVE RECENTLY SENT MY SPANISH REGISTERED CAR BACK TO MY RELATION IN UK. – with the car I sent the original UK headlights and the original U.K. Number Plate.
I asked him to précis the process involved, here is what he did :-
This is the sequence I've worked through... The car which was originally purchased new by you in the UK, then exported to Spain and re-registered in your name under Spanish number plates and then recently returned to the UK.
If you intend to return a previously registered car to the UK you'll not be able to insure it with UK brokers under foreign number plates. So, you do have to re-register it.
Firstly, you must inform HM Revenue and Customs that you intend to repatriate the car. You have to do this within 14 days of the car getting back to the UK. You can do this on-line on the HMRC website. You will need various bits of info such as what was the original number plate, what is the current Spanish number plate, original owner, new owner, where was the car purchased and by whom, why/when is the car coming back? and so on...
You'll need to have a 'Gateway user ID and password' from HMRC to do this. If you don't have one, you'll need to register with HMRC and get one..
Once the application to HMRC has been submitted they'll respond in a few days to say what, if any, fees are due; ie, VAT, etc. In our case, I'm guessing that as you bought the car new and paid the VAT back then I haven't had to pay anything else. Don't recall paying anything to make the application...if I did, it wasn't much or I'd have remembered. They then confirm that you are then able to submit a form V55/5 (Application for first vehicle tax and registration of a used motor vehicle) to DVLA.
DVLA Form V55/5 is relatively painless but does ask a number of questions that may or may not apply.
I filled it in where I could and submitted it to DVLA with...
A new UK MOT Certificate. -. £50’ish
A photocopy of my photocard driving licence.
A photocopy of the HMRC reply indicating that there are no outstanding payments due and that I can now apply for registration.
Don't know if these were required but...Your info (passport details) as well as Spanish ID and residency papers together with Spanish vehicle registration documentation and a copy of the transportation sheet signed by you.
Cheque to cover the appropriate road tax. DVLA confirmed how much over the phone.
Haven't paid anything to make the application. I may be faced with a bill from them shortly.
The UK MOT system does not recognise foreign number plates so we tried your old UK plate and it worked!!
Seems to be that if the car was previously registered under a UK number plate DVLA retain the number. In other words it doesn't get re-issued to another vehicle.
My insurance company recognised the old number and insured me accordingly. Only had to pay an admin fee. All in all...it hasn't actually cost me that much. Other people in different situations, however, may find the process more frustrating and expensive.
