The Spanish Driving Licence is an EU licence therefore you can drive anywhere in the EU with it

Yes, but the question is whether I can drive a *UK registered car*, which I own, in the EU. Apparently not in Spain where I am resident, but what about elsewhere?

It's not the Spanish licence, it's because of being non UK resident.

Keith Michael's use Www.tempcover.com for the actual insurance so I suggest you read their T&C's before getting too excited.

They themselves say

"Some companies won't offer policies on cars in the UK to people who live overseas, but there are some that do, so you may need to shop around a little"

'some' and 'shop around a little' are gross understatements but regardless why would they need to say such a thing if their cover is what it purports to be, or should I say what people wish it to be!

Buyers beware!

Mine is through Aviva and totally above board. You're scaremongering unnecessarily again. All anyone has to do is phone them up and they will tell them what they can, or cannot, do.

Paul Uden wrote:We are residents here with Spanish driving licences, but still have a car in the UK for when we visit. We are wondering about driving it back here just temporarily as an alternative to flying one time. Then we'll drive it back the next time we visit family in the UK and leave it there again. We wouldn't even need to drive it once we're back in Spain because we have our Spanish plated car here so could leave it parked on our driveway throughout if necessary.

So my question is, can I do this? I assume yes, but for how long? Obviously we would need to check the insurance and get a UK sticker! Anything else to think about?

Just a thought, who is the registered owner in the UK?

Do you have any children/friends that could be the registered owner? Gift the car.

You are allowed to drive a UK registered car in Spain, as a Spanish resident with a Spanish driving licence, as long as you are NOT the registered owner. You need to have permission and be insured. You do not need the owner to be in the car with you. However, it helps if you have a "permission to use" form filled in & signed by the owner, along with photocopy of relevant ID's.

I think you'll find, as already mentioned, you can only drive a UK reg car if the owner is non resident and is in the car with you.

From the Citizens Advice Bureau:
Once you have registered as resident on the Registro de Extranjeros, you cannot drive a foreign plated vehicle anymore, unless it is owned by a non-resident and the owner is with you in the car

I'm sorry Marcliff but, with respect, that's not correct.

As a Spanish resident you can drive a UK (or any foreign) registered car in Spain as long as you do not own the car. The legality of the car doesn't really matter as long as you have the owners permission. It is up the the legally registered owner to ensure that the car is fully legal, not the driver. If stopped by traffico and found to be illegal the UK car may be seized and removed to a compound but the Spanish driver will suffer no prosecution.

This has been asked a number of times and a volunteer police group (N332 group) have produced a set of guidelines to help immigrant motorists stay within the Spanish law.

I've included the quotes in case others don't have access to Facebook. The Citizens advice bureau are wrong (yet again) on this point.

N332 - ANSWER"Can a Spanish resident drive a UK registered car in Spain? Or has the owner been with him. ?Of course, you can drive or ride a vehicle registered in another country.People mix concepts, between having a vehicle and driving someone else's vehicle.-Law states your vehicle should be registered and taxed in the country where you have your normal residence. So in this case, there is no doubt. Once you become resident you must begin the process.- If someone comes on holiday to Spain with his vehicle, you can drive it and you don't need him to go with you.On these cases, we always advice to have written permission from the owner together with a photocopy of his ID, which is not compulsory but you will save time and questions if you are stopped by the Police.Special Taxes Law regulates that Officers will act against those residents driving their vehicles registered in other countries, but there are no administrative offences for those residents driving these vehicles from other people, even if the owner is resident in Spain because it is not their responsibility to legalize the situation of the vehicle.Police could remove the vehicle until the owner legalizes the situation, giving him a fine, but not for the driver unless this is the owner.
Drivers are not responsible if the vehicle is untaxed, uninsured, MOT expired or registered in another country breaking the Special Tax Law. It is the sole responsibility of the owner, so you don´t have to be afraid of driving your friend´s vehicle registered in his home country.
"

.......Hope this helps others
