Should we buy a Spanish Car or just hire when we come over?

Should we buy a Spanish Car or just hire when we come over?

Postby jbeckybo » Sun May 24, 2015 12:12 am

Hi

Have bought a house is Algorfa and should be getting keys early in June. We won't be moving out for a few years yet unless job situation changes here. Not sure what to do in the long term/short term. Should we buy a Spanish Car or just hire when we come over? Not looking forward to driving at all in Spain but needs must. Been quoted 55 euros each way from airport, then enquired about going down to village in Algorfa which is 2 mins in car from Montemar and been quoted 16 euros return which I think is costly if you just want to pop out for a friendly beer in the village. If we buy a car in Spain how does insurance work as family members may come over .....can you get insurance for multiple drivers??? I know it will cost us roughly 300 euros to park car at airport for a year.

Any information greatly appreciated

Thanks
Michelle

In Spain, it's the car that's insured, not the driver. Anyone over a certain age (normally 25) can drive the car as long as they have permission from the owner.
With regards to owning or renting, it would depend on how many times you visit. A return journey to the airport is about 90 to 100 euro. 3 times a year would pay the parking fees.
Hiring can be as cheap as 50 euro a week or 200 a week depending on time of year. You'd still have to insure it in Spain, no SORN here, which is about the same as UK but includes breakdown cover.
it all depends on your circumstances.

Hi Michelle,
To add to marcliff's answer there is another topic on here asking a similar question, see link below. The topic is an old one but the answers are still quite relevant and could be helpful:

Car hire or car purchase?

You can have a spanish car and get the inssurance on it. but don´t forget that you have to pass the MOT nearly every two years depending on the car. That it´s cost around 65€. If the car it´s inssuranced, any person over 25 yeras old can drive it as long as they have the right driving licence. If you need more information, let me know...Just be carefull with the second hand car in the area. Don´t trust everybody
