Speed Limiters in new cars

Speed Limiters in new cars

Postby Big Wheeler » Tue Aug 31, 2021 12:43 pm

I read that new cars from 2022 will be fitted with speed limiters.Given that everybody loves following a lorry that can go 0.01 mph faster than the one it is overtaking, will that soon apply to new car drivers.Or will people stick to older cars out of the scope of the scope of the new regs.I can't see a new BMW or Audi driver being blown away by a boy racer in a Corsa.

Depends on the limiter. I have a variable limiter in my car and I use it all of the time, particularly in average speed check areas

Same here. The C4 I have has an adjustable speed limiter. Up for limiter / down for cruise control.
Put the limiter on going from the Mercadona in Rojales via the golf course to a friends house on the old aerodrome.
Very embarrassing being overtaken by a 12 year old on an electric scooter :(

I get the impression that new car owners will have their top speed limited electronically,as do heavy lorries. It seems that your accelerator pedal will push back against your foot if you attempt to go too fast.
Modern cars have so much in the way of electronics I think many things are possible that the authorities could do to interfere with a car's progress or location.

The new ISL (intelligent Speed Limiter) can still be overridden and is a driver assistant as opposed to control. Pushing downhill on the throttle will override it.

It would have been more productive to have cars detect when a mobile phone is txt’ing, dialling, receiving video, or is just up at someone’s ear !!

I have all these buttons, dials, switches, remote scrolling thingies in the car, you name it, even a flashing red button which, if I press it, alerts the emergency services to my location or another button next to it which contacts the service centre to come and get me in case of breakdown. I can press a button and changed the speedo to MPH instead of KPH or another one to changed the headlights to dip the other way.

What I haven't got is one marked "crystal ball" so I can see what way someone ahead of me is going as they obviously bought cars with no indicators. Roundabouts being extremely "fun" when guessing which way they are going.

I have similar buttons, switches and even a system that tells me to "take a coffee" when the need arises.
However, not one of them helps educate the driver in the adjacent, or oncoming vehicle, on the actual rules of the road, as instructed by the DGT.
Regarding "intermittendes" only put on a vehicle for a way to fail the ITV.
