To buy U.K. or Spanish motorhome

To buy U.K. or Spanish motorhome

Postby Les scott » Sat May 25, 2019 1:57 pm

I am moving to Spain later in the year, we are thinking about buying a motorhome to tour Spain and Europe and will use it to live in when we we go back to the uk visiting family(so we don't have to sofa surf)Our main home will be in Spain.

Our thoughts are do we buy in Spain or do we buy in the uk . Any help would be appreciated

Thank you

If your main home is in Spain you would be better to have it registered here and registering a UK motor home can be costly and problematic.

I would compare prices, especially if you are buying 2nd hand. I am not sure about the motorhome market, but 2nd hand cars keep their value a lot longer in Spain.

My thought would be buy in Spain. If you import from the U.K.you'll have to pay import duty, transfer fees, certification for gas and electrics etc.
Hope that helps

I would buy in whichever country you are resident in. It might be better to wait until you get your residencia in Spain and obtain your Spanish driving license, before purchasing your motorhome. (It may be even more difficult to keep a UK registered vehicle in Spain after Brexit)

If buying 2nd hand do make sure that the vehicle is properly registered as a motorhome as the ITV (Spanish MOT) will check for any unauthorised/uncertificated alterations to the vehicle from the time of initial registration/matriculation.

BTW IIRC It's illegal for a Spanish resident to drive a UK registered vehicle in Spain and for a UK resident to drive a Spanish registered vehicle in the UK.

Good luck.

Depends on the layout you want. Personally we do not like the continental layout with its tiny cooker with no electric plate, minimal food storage space in the kitchen, high bed that you have to climb steps to get into, no sensible relaxation area, the dinette seats are usually fixed upright, and you normally have to turn the driving seats around to get any kind of lounging area. I could go on!

Give me the UK design any day for sensible layout and comfort.
Look at various designs very carefully before you buy!
Also ask yourself - do you really want to drive a LHD vehicle on the crowded roads in the UK?

And finally I DO NOT THINK BREXIT WILL EVER HAPPEN!
