You can check the DVLA website (via gov.uk) to see if a car has a valid UK MOT and Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax) is upto date. There are a number of free apps for mobiles (such as Vehicle Smart) that when you put a UK registration in shows whether it has a current MOT and is taxed within a couple of seconds. It will also show the vehicles entire MOT history and mileage per year is shown.Vehicle Smart also has a button to report a non taxed vehicle to DVLA directly.

The ASKMID website allows an individual to check if their own car is insured. It should not be used to check someone else's car, but I'm sure it is.
The Spanish police can simply check the DVLA website for MOT and Tax situation. If either is out, it's probably not insured, which they can then check easily (as long as UK is part of EU at least).

Maybe some of the cars UK cars I've seen here over the past few years drive back to the UK for an annual MOT and are only used in Spain for 3 months in the year. But the cynical side of me doubts that is so so every vehicle...

Good info'. However, a UK registered vehicle can (currently) stay in Spain for up to 12 months..... as long as the owner remains a UK resident and the vehicle is street legal in the UK (tax, MOT & insurance). It's the owner that has to leave Spain before 30 days and not become Spanish resident, intentionally or otherwise. See ..... https://lifestylegroup.es/how-long-can-i-legally-keep-and-drive-a-uk-registered-car-in-spain/

EU rules dictate that a vehicle may only circulate in another state for a maximum of 6 months in any 12, look it up if you don't believe it.

Council Directive 83/182/EEC of 28 March 1983

30 days for the owner? Both articles say 6 months in any one year.

And the vehicle can stay in another EU country as long as it is taxed, MOTd and insured during that time so, logically, it can stay a couple of days short of a year before requiring an MOT.
It cannot, however, be used for more than 6 months in that year but must remain fully street legal the whole time.

That's the problem you get when you listen to the oily rag instead of the engine driver!

Council Directive 83/182/EEC of 28 March 1983

Quoted Directive states "
As a general rule, the temporary importation of these means of transport for
private use
is exempt from taxes — provided that the individual importing it is
normally resident
in a country other than the country of import — for at least 6 in any 12 months."......It is the individual that must be resident in country other than the country of import for at least 6 in any 12 months. There is no mention that the car must be taken out of the country after 6 months. It is the UK law regarding exporting vehicles that ensures the vehicle cannot remain outside the UK for longer than 12 months. (and the requirement for an MOT if required).

Sorry Marcliff, I did mean to write 90 days, not 30. However, If I'd have said 6 months someone would jump in and say that you become resident after 90 days! (Just trying to keep it simple).
