Uk driving licience

We have now been in Spain for 4 weeks and obtained residencia
What are the current rules on using UK driving licence

You can drive on a UK licence for up to 6 months after becoming a resident. You will, at the moment, have to take a Spanish driving test in order to obtain a new licence.

Talks are still ongoing between UK and Spain on recognising the validity of the UK licence but doesn't seem much progress on this front.

Hopefully they sort something out mind with the way the Uk government works won’t hold me breath

I may be wrong but I think after this month if you are resident you ca not drive on a uk license. To get a Spanish one now you have to pass their
Test. I may be wrong so you need to get proper advice as it is major for you.

That extension was increased until the end of December this year so you can exchange your UK licence if you were resident before Dec 31st 2020. This is when the agreement between the EU and UK ends and they are negotiating the way forward. It was originally 6 months, extended to the end of October and then extended to the end of December 2021 because of the difficulties caused by covid.

You are allowed to drive for 6 months after becoming resident which gives you time to take the lessons, arrange the test and take the written exam first.

But, yes, you must take a Spanish test and cannot change your UK licence if you became resident this year.

Marcliff,am I right in saying the test must be completed in Spanish.? This is going to be so difficult for those that did not change when they had the opportu ity.

I thought the theory could be taken in English but not the actual driving test

If the test has to be taken in Spanish, thousands of ex pats will be selling cars cheap !!!! Or get there visiting relatives to drive for them
The whole situation is madness, especially when along with everything else Uk driving licience are “world beating”

You can take the Spanish written test in English if you inform them first. This also applies to foreign students who wish to take a test. However, the practical test is in Spanish only.

There can’t be too many Brits who could drive badly enough to pass a Spanish driving test
