What is the law in Spain regarding child seats in a car?

Postby Jordy » Thu Jun 12, 2014 10:53 am

Hello all,

What is the law in Spain regarding child seats in a car?

We are expecting visitors shortly who will have a 3 year old with them will be using our car.
We don't own one and don't want to have to buy one just for a week or two's use?
Suggestions very welcome. :?

At that age it's either a forward facing child seat or a booster seat with child straps (normal seat belts are only for those aged 6).
The new law that has just taken effect means a car can be impounded if the correct child seats are not fitted.
There is a place in San Luis called juniors hire centre (phone 966 786 225) that hires child seats. I haven't seen a similar place in Quesada but someone may know.

As an add on to marcliffe's answer post above. The new laws say this (Quote):

Small children may not ride in the front seat. Law enforcement officers will be able to stop and fine drivers carrying children under 1.35 meters in the front passenger seat, unless all the back seats are already taken up by other children also under the height limit (or the car has no back seats at all). Until now, under-12's could ride in the front as long as they had a booster seat or other approved retaining device. Taxis will have to follow the same rules, but parents, not taxi drivers, will be held accountable for violations. Fines can also reach 200 euros.

New reasons for immobilizing vehicles -- As well as the vehicles of drivers who let children ride without the proper safety devices...

Hope this helps.

Jan.

Please note that new laws on child car seats come into operation from 1st October.
No-one under 18 and 1.36metres tall (about 4ft 6ins) may travel in the front seat of a car unless the rear seats are already occupied by other children or if it is a 2 seater.
There are other rules but I'm on my tablet and can't paste links. Will do later.
