This isn't a botijo!
This isn't a botijo!
by Martin the artist » Mon Sep 27, 2021 8:18 am
From Saturday 2nd October, there will be a new exhibition at the caves called 'This is not a botijo' and inauguration is at 7pm to which everyone is invited.
A botijo is a traditional water cooling jar, and the artists of the caves association and friends, like me, were all loaned a botijo to decorate.
I have called mine 'shabby' trying to give a feel of shabby-chic & with simplified figures to represent my life drawing.
Translation of the published information about the event:-
This is a project done by artists, craftsmen and friends from the Caves of Rojales association for the Mengolero Room.
The aim is to hold an exhibition that reflects Rojale's customs and artistic currentness of the Rodeo Caves, involving the neighbours of the village to participate in an active manner.
As a concept for the project we have chosen TRADITION AND CONTEMPORANEOUS.
For traditional we will work with a piece linked to the customs of the past and transmitting ingrained emotions to our peoples. Being the object chosen a bottle.
As far as contemporary is concerned, every artist should intervene on the chosen piece to give it a new meaning.
This is how we combine in one space customs and modernity.
We lift the humble bottle to the artwork category.
For this we have the collaboration of the Museum of the Huerta
Rojales, lending us traditional pieces, with the Archaeological Museum of Rojales and Rojalera Chronicle and its valuable archive of old images of trades and customs of Rojales, with Vicente Fuster exposing his costumes of Moors and Christians.
In addition, we have a demonstration of the live craft of Esparto work.
We thank City Council, artists and collaborators.

The inauguration is at 7pm.
The exhibition can then be viewed in during normal opening hours - i.e. most days from 10am to 2pm.
If you find the Sala Mengolero gallery cave (cave 4) closed, ask Marie-Jesus in the information cave (no. 6) or Carmen the leather worker in the next cave (no. 5) & they will open it for you.
It will be on for the next month or possibly 2 months.
