Any ideas for attractive plants for an unmanaged garden?

Any ideas for attractive plants for an unmanaged garden?

Postby Sasta » Tue Aug 11, 2015 1:19 pm

Hello,

Does anyone have any ideas for plants that are quite hardy and do not need a lot of attention. I have a small border and would like to have something pretty, that does not need to be looked after on a regular basis.

Thanks

Avoid bougainvillea and Jasmine like the plague. They grow like Topsy and make a lot of mess. Things in pots on patios are the easiest to manage. I'd recommend succulents like cacti and thick leaved plants which don't need much water and grow slowly. Hibiscus is stunning, if you have a watering system. An olive tree always looks wonderful, but citrus trees are prone to bugs. Palm trees look benign, but they grow fast and need pruning twice a year to remove dead leaves and messy flower heads. Yuccas are good - though the leaves have nasty spikes on the ends. Hope that helps!

How about a cyca (sago palm) very slow growing will need a bit of space as they will get quite thick trunks in the long run. lavender will need a trim back but quite tolerant of neglect.Have a look for some of the larger succulents for height.

You could consider some artificial palms and roses, coupled with some other artificial varieties. Don´t need much water ( other than to clean once or twice a year ) and are easily uprooted when the sun has faded them too much.

OK, Jokes aside, have you considered a gardener to help maintain the garden. Not my interest, but know a couple of good guys who will do as and when, or, once a month tidy up for very reasonable rates
