Pop into one of the garden centres. They have loads all year round and very reasonable. We have several types of flowering cactus in pots which take minimal looking after. We also have hibiscus (beautiful bushes in a variety of colours) oleander (big and flowering with all year greenery but be careful if you have pets or young children as they can be poisonous). Of course, we also have bougainvillea but they are just showy, no scent and cause a mess when they dry up. Tomato plants in pots come out with lovely flowers and have the added bonus of giving delicious fruits. We were getting a dozen cherry tomatoes every couple of days and the plant only cost a couple of euros. Jasmine can get out of control but has a delicious scent in the early evening, just make sure it is kept well trimmed and wouldn't recommend it unless you are here permanently. We also have asters, geraniums and have long pots on the wall with marigolds and primula (for the early spring).
Already having blooms coming out on asters and also on the geraniums.
The only ones actually planted in the ground are oleander, hibiscus, miniature palms/dracena and a not very successful tangerine shrub. There is an orange bell jasminoid around the arch and all the rest are in pots.

Marcliff thanks for that , sounds like your garden is so vibrant,(any photos) ?,wondering if there are any lavender type plants with a similar scent.
Yes we will go along to the garden centre ,as we have pets I think the oleander is one we will leave out.
Interested in the flowering cactus.
Once again thanks for your input.

Yes, we have a lavender in a long pot on our back wall. Very large purple flowers. It is right next to the herb pot with rosemary (which grows wild here), parsley and oregano. You have to keep the latter two a bit shaded as they tend to burn in the sun.
We also have small pots on the wall, you know, those hanging type ones. My wife buys small plants for about a euro or so and puts them in there. So far we have had to re-pot several as they have grown so large. One is now almost a tree and has been repotted 3 times to a larger pot. It is a type of cactus with multi-colour leaves in reds and yellow. This year it has sprouted a huge yellow flower in the middle which the bees think is marvellous. Another one in a pot has a very thorny stem with green leaves and has come out in small yellow star shaped flowers. Yet another of the cactus, which looks like octopus legs, has come up with very high red flowers and yet another which has dozens of long, thin stems now coming out with orange and yellow flowers on it. We also had one pot with a miniature pomegranate bush which looked like it died off but is now full of snapdragons in yellow and red (no idea where they came from as we certainly didn't plant them).
It may be a pain re-potting the plants but the only maintenance they need is a quick aeration with a small fork now and again and a little bit of phosphate feed a couple of time a year. Plus you can move them when you get bored with a particular display.
We also started off with one aloe vera plant which started to sprout little baby ones on the side. We used a fork to take them out, put them in water to get the roots started and then potted them. We now have 4 or 5 large ones dotted round the garden and have given loads away to our neighbours all from the first plant 6 years ago.

(Sorry about the typing ...the editor software seems to be playing-up!)
I have learnt the hard way what are NOt good plants for those loke me who don't wish to be continually watering and hacking-back!
I'd advise avoiding bougainvillea like the plague ...they are untidy., messy, over-vigorous, and have vicious thorns.
Lantana is colourful, but the roots go everywhere, and I don't like the smell of it!
Both jasmine and solanum(Potato Bush) need constant trimming. I do like roses, and, if you have space for a big tree, I love the jacaranda. Hibiscus is pretty, but a bit tender if you are in a place which suffers cold winds in Winter.
