Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes

Postby Dinkelharper » Sat May 27, 2017 1:42 pm

Need some advise. I was told by a neighbor saying that our hedge surrounding our yard is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, big and small. I think it is a cypress kind, not entirely sure. Anyway, does anyone know of something one can spray the hedge with to prevent breeding mosquitoes?

they don't breed in hedges ...they lay their eggs in still water ..so spraying a hedge is not going to help much ..just make sure there is no still water in trays or waterbutts (get a lid ) they only nead a small amount of water ..

Please explain then how there are millions of mosquitoes in El Recorral park! There is NO standing water there at all. Standing water is their ideal place to lay eggs but when that does not exist they find alternatives which from they can "draw" liquids. I.e green hedges. Back to my original question. What can I use to spray? I assume it would be the same as one uses when they breed in still waters. But what?

Terry the gardener is right, they need water to lay their eggs. With trees, there are normally holes in the branches where water settles or even dew. That is enough to attract them. Of course, the more water there is then the more there will be.
In your garden, any type of water will get them to lay their eggs. Make sure you have no old pots, bird baths, rain barrels, even plastic toys or buckets. Just watering the plants could leave a small amount of water on the ground in a shady area which they can use.
For a killer you need a larvicide but I have no idea what brands are available here. We used to use an American brand in Cyprus called Pre-strike which contains methoprene or metopreno in Spanish.
Of course, if there is no water at all then they may not even be mosquitoes. Pretty sure that there are other little biting and flying things over here.

No, they do need water to lay eggs in. However some plants,
Ike the giant white bird of paradise, have small puddles at the base of their leaves which serves these buggers well, as does the stream running through La Marquesa one side of Recorral Park and the reservoirs the other.

Is there an optimum time when they lay eggs or is it all summer long ?

Many types of adult mosquitoes rest in vegetation during the day time. Trim and get rid of overgrowth.
To get rid of adult mosquitoes spray the foliage of bushes and shrubs with a residual insecticide bushes are a perfect resting place for the little blighters and then they pounce!.

So spray or oust the bushes.
Also you can use Mosquito spirals (Espirales antimosquitos) very effective and cost little but only use outside you can get them in most places and you can get a pot holder for them just put a cuple near the bushes.

If you do have any standing water you don't want to get rid of the best solution I have found is Mosquito Dunks they can be quite economical if you read the instructions as the amount you use is only relative to the surface area of the water so if you have a water butt you only need a small bit of a Dunk and each bit lasts 30 days these can be used in bird baths as well as they are harmless.

There are small biting things that live in bouganvilia and we've found the best thing to control them is the cheap insect spray from Mercadona, €1.89 or thereabouts
