Plant Advice & Where To Buy
Plant Advice & Where To Buy
by white_hart » Mon Jan 02, 2017 8:53 pm
Does anyone have any advice on plants, trees etc. which would be suitable for a garden and terrace area of around 60 square metres?
We're after slow-growing, low maintenance plants of varying heights, either colourful or characterful. The plants will mostly be grown in pots of varying sizes, and will need to be "happy" where there's a small pool (ie. don't drop too many leaves, or don't desperately seek water if they break free of the pots!).
The list we have so far is:
Mimosas
Gracilis Japonica
Bird of Paradise (Strelizia)
Spineless Yucca
Agapanthus
Japanese Blood Grass
We'd love a palm, but my guess is they may grow too tall, and after looking at other threads, they seem quite high-maintenance! My other half loves Bougainvillea, but - again - after looking at other threads - they look like a nightmare to handle!!!
Also - any advice on where to purchase the plants would be fab. We're located very near to Jardineria Christian off CV-895, so hopefully they're quite good with regard to stock and (potential) delivery.
TIA!

Avoid bougainvillea, they are a nightmare to care for if you aren't here all the time and, even then, they take some care.
Try Dracena, several types and are a small (ish) yucca or palm type. We have two, one is now about 4 foot tall after 7 years and the other about 8 feet tall but not broad or spikey.
Loads of succulents over here. We have a 2 ft tall cactus type which has yellow flowers all year round. These take very little watering which is something to consider as you may not want to leave a watering system on while you are away.
Most of the cacti will flower at some time and do well in pots.
Christian garden centre is very good though can be a bit overpriced. There is a good one on the left going towards Los Montesinos and another good one on the next roundabout heading towards Quesada.

Garden centre on the roundabout towards Los Montesinos is Natur and are excellent. Staff choice and cost beat Christians hands down except that Christians have a larger range in bigger trees etc but if Natur don't have what you want they will source it for you and speak very good English.
