Poisonous garden hedge?

Poisonous garden hedge?

Postby Liz & Gordon » Sun Dec 21, 2014 8:41 pm

New home has a lovely looking flowering hedge, we have been advised that when it flowers these can be harmful/deadly to the dogs.
Initially I have arranged to have the hedge trimmed back. Before we move over with the dogs later next year (should we have it completely removed.

Hey Liz and Gordon.
Could you please post a photo of the hedge? (preferably in flower if you have one)
Thanks.
Paul.

It could be the Oleander - They are one of the most poisonous of commonly grown garden plants. They have lovely flowers and are very hardy as they grow and flower with hardly any watering. They come in red, pink, white and cream flowers and are known as 'flowers of the desert' for obvious reasons. You can see them in the centre separation part of most roads, used there because they can be trimmed into pretty hedges and for their hardiness.

We have some at the rear of our garden in Spain and always wear rubber gloves when cutting back. I chose them because they do not needing watering, even in the height of Summer and I personally do not believe in using automatic watering systems. We don't have animals or young children, so no worries there, but if we did I would be a bit worried as the sap is the most toxic part and while cutting you can see it leak out of the stem.

Saying all this there are many gardens around that have Oleander's in them.

Here's an article on them :

If in doubt, get rid.
Not worth the risk.
When we moved into our current rental house, the garden was lovely, but some non pet-child friendly plants. They ALL came out.
We had a dog lost an eye on a mini palm leaf-spike at a previous house and another dog was Very ill from Oliander. (didn't know about them then....)
Won't let that happen again.
Have a safe trip and Merry Christmas.
Paul.

There is an area near the Aqua park that takes garden waste. You need to go to the town hall in Rojales for a license which is free. Might save on some of the expense.

We have just removed 4 oleanders and their roots run deep.

Smishar thanks Jan did make us aware of the Oleander your further detail is important re the plant roots, the garden area we have is mainly tiled and close to the Oleander,we were thinking of chainsaw to ground level treat and leave the roots in situ, would the town hall request quantity details prior to issuing license we also have four and a type of small tree to get rid of the Oleander is approx 10 ft high.
