Wasps

Wasps

Postby Niktam » Thu Jan 07, 2016 2:22 pm

Arrived to find we have a few wasps going in and out a small hole in the wall by the water stop tap. Not in an issue at the moment but don't want a thousand wasps on our next visit in a month or so.
Simple thing is to bung the hole up just before we leave or if not does anyone know a pest controller they can recommend?

We had a similar problem and very carefully at dusk (when wasps are less active) we puffed some ant / wasp killer powder in the place where the wasps were but my husband put long sleeve clothes on and a piece of netting over his face with a hat on while he did it and I 'helpfully' stayed indoors and watched from the window. LOL..It worked.

I would never ever kill bees!! One of the main reasons I don't believe in pesticides or weed killer ....Mason bees are easy to distinguish from wasps too and they are harmless.

We only used the wasp powder because they were in the way and causing a nuisance when we were painting the house...and they were definitely big wasps starting to build a nest

Mason Bees, also known as masonry bees (often mistaken for wasps in the spring time) burrow into soft mortar in brickwork. They also use the new plastic mortar vents which are installed in modern houses. They pack these holes with mud and pollen and then lay eggs. They are active in the spring for around a month. Once they have laid eggs, they will disappear.
If you have Masonry Bees burrowing into your brickwork, you need to have the brickwork re-pointed.

I've only seen seen 4/5 and they are very large wasps. They were around in August but I assumed they would go elsewhere as we haven't been back since. Reduced in numbers since then but they are somewhat larger than what we see in the UK.

Hello

Blocking the hole with a good blob of cement will do the trick, also, use ordinary household fly spray around the area before you attempt this, it will prevent being stung..............
