What is making the noise?

What is making the noise?

Postby calamitykay » Thu Oct 02, 2014 9:46 pm

Sorry, here's another question - every day, especially when the sun is shining (nearly every day lol!), we hear a noise that sounds like, well, like a clacking noise. Like 2 plastic blocks being hit together, is it being made by an animal, bird, what?
It is driving us mad!! Not the sounds, but the not knowing lol!!!

Thank you again!!

haha I think you hear the insects (like crickets) & believe they are called Cicadas...we were told if they are particularly noisy at night indicates a nice day to follow ..rather like the cows laying down meant rain in UK

Morning Cornishbug :)
Thank you for your reply, I am familiar with the Cicadas, they make that lovely noise at night, the noise I keep hearing is nothing like the constant sound of the Cicadas though - it is a single usually monotonous sound every few seconds or sometimes even longer. If you can imagine holding 2 large plastic lego bricks and hitting them together just once (or for that matter 2 coconut shells), that's the sound. You know like when you click your tongue from the roof of your mouth?

I must admit, I first thought of the Cicada but that is more of a constant electrical sound. Yours sounds more like a woodpecker but not sure if they are in Spain (??).

The mystery deepens!

This is probably way off the mark,! but we had a loud cracking noise, when we lived in the uk,it was always when the sun was shining, and it was really loud, I used to go outside looking to see what could be making the noise,it was loudest in the conservatory, then found out it was the guttering plastic!! when the sun shone on it, sounds ridicules but when people visited they would comment, then I told them what it was, at first no one would believe, till I proved it.

That happens to our conservatory, in the UK, all the time in the hot sunshine - I know what you mean, it is loud!

Hi CK,

It´s possible what you are hearing are toads calling to each other. We´ve seen a lot this past week or so and they always appear after we´ve had a drop of rain.
There are also green woodpeckers around here. They can be very loud but this normally occurs in the Spring when they are looking for a mate. Their call is very much like what you are describing.
