Drain smells

Drain smells

Postby Heldo1967 » Sat Aug 07, 2021 9:37 pm

Hi folks, I’ve finally managed to get back to Spain and the smell in my apartment was disgusting. The drains in the complex are cleaned/sanitised regularly and I’ve had the bathroom ripped out and a shower room installed one COVID. CN anyone give me suggestions How to overcome this? I’ve tried, bleach, harpic and numerous cleaners without success.

Most waste water systems have " traps " or u bends. When they dry out the odour from the drains will pass back into the flat or building. Flush all toilets, run showers, sinks etc to fill the traps. Open all windows and doors and wait for the smell to dissipate. It will take some time as soft fabrics such as curtains and sofas accumulate odours and it takes time to leave them. You could use a product such as " Febreze " which may help

Toilet bowls in Spain can differ from uk in that they don't have a sealed outlet as such. They can rely on the base of the toilet forming the seal with the floor, if the sealant has cracked/crumbled sewage smells will get out...

When we're away from our apartment for long periods of time we cover the toilet bowl with clingfilm to prevent the water evaporating (don't forget to remove before use). We also fill the basin/shower/sink traps with cheap olive oil (you don't need much).

BTW Don't use bleach on chrome plated fittings, they go black.....Ask me how I know

The Brico by Consum has a very good cleaner for putting down loos and sinks that give a lovely smell of flowers. You simply put one capful in a litre of water and it takes any bad smells away very quickly.
Has a picture of flowers on the plastic bottle and lasts for ages. We use it about once every six months in the loos, the sinks and the showers and it really takes any lingering smells away.
