heating issues.
by IanCollins » Mon Jan 04, 2021 12:12 pm
Hi all,
I know heating houses while it is very cold can be an issue but;
Recently had installed a 5kw pellet burner. Dont think it is man enough for the job,20m2 lounge with open staircase. Also an issue with the flue cap filling with water, but thats another story.
Have started using the air con unit in the lounge for heat, but despite trying variuos settings the lounge struggles to get above 18 degrees according to the thermostat at the far end of the room.
any suggestions appreciated, my wif hates the cold and the house being in shade this time of year has already been an issue.

On who's advice did you have a 5kw pellet burner installed sounds like you need at least a 8kw and maybe it needs to be situated in a different location I would think most of the heat is going up the staircase
I would have a word with the installer

I was advised by an Air-Con man that you should start up your Air-Con heating well before the sun goes down (when the temp plummets) as Air-Con is good at maintaining temperature but not so good at raising it. Not sure if this helps your situation but I found it helped us in the evenings . . .

Hi i have the same type lounge with the open stairs.. in the winter months i put up a heavy lined pair of curtains at the bottom of the stairs to seperate the lounge so to speak... works a treat for me. Just buy them exspandable curtain poles with rubber ends that have suctions on them so u have no holes or drilling really does work!

I agree with Shirley Ann we put a double extending curtain pole and have two sets of curtains on which works a treat, also one heavy curtain for the archway going into the kitchen it really does help!

My lounge is 75 square metres and 2.5 metres high and is kept very warm by a very large log burner or I can use 2 air con units but do not like the hum they make
The log burner throws out a lot of heat but gobbles up a lot of wood also has a fan which we do not use
