Household water meter access

Household water meter access

Postby MOJI » Fri Nov 03, 2023 8:27 am

Hi

I've recently bought a holiday home in the local area. I'm trying to find out if it's normal for the president of the communities to be the sole key holder for the water supply meter to my house. I'd like to be able to shut the water off before travelling back to the UK, but this means having to request the key when I leave, then again when I return. This seems a bit of a hassle.

Thanks

Jim

I suppose it depends some communities have individual water meters near there front gates as i have and everyone has a key ,mine is a simple allen key so i can turn it off anytime i want ,which is a good idea, Five of our community have had bills in the thousands over undetected leaks including our pool area that incurred a 5,000 euro bill.
Some communities have a communal water meter that's under the control of the President so it depends where your meter is

Thanks for the reply

We live in part of a quad, there is 4 meters in that particular box. I do understand the need for the meter box to be locked/secured, but personally I'd think the home owners should have a key. As you mentioned above, I've also heard a few horror stories where owners have ended up with a massive bill due to leaks. I've already approached the president but he informed me he was the key holder.

I think 2 people should have a key as presidents aren't always available perhaps the administrator should hold one? What with squatters too nicking water by swapping over pipes that needs to be checked

I am the President of a community & we have the water meter cupboards locked because some unscrupulous owners have swapped pipes over from holiday homes to their own permanent home, so i disagree with all home owners holding a key. I am the only person holding the keys & if i go away then either the Vice President or a reliable, trustworthy owner will hold them. When second home owners are visiting they either phone, message or e-mail & i turn the water on prior to their arrival & off again on their departure.
Regards,
Dave.

There may be a legal issue here. Every owner should have personal access to their own water meter. In our community every member has a key to the communal water meter cupboard. This was decided by our Administrator who is a practising lawyer. Any untoward interference should be met with a denuncia. The President of course can check the meters/water supply at any time.

We all pay a quarterly rental charge (standing charge) for the water meter! Surely you MUST have access to it as it’s in YOUR name and YOU pay for it, as well as the water it measures!

We had the Guardia Civil up after one owner suspected the unscrupulous owner was tapping into there water supply & they said the amount of water stolen was negligable & they weren't interested in taking the case further.

No it's not normal for the president of the community to have sole access to the water meter cupboard/room.

You pay you own water bill and are solely responsible for reporting any leaks. If you fail to turn off your water while you're away and a leak occurs it will be you paying for the repair and water usage.

All owners on our community have access to the communal water room, so that they can check their meter and turn off their water at any time of the day or night. Nobody should be traipsing after a key holder who may be out for the evening or uncontactable for any reason.

You might want to raise this issue at your next AGM.
