How effective is security glass

How effective is security glass

Postby hamish258 » Sat Oct 01, 2022 3:46 pm

Hey folks, having some work done on the house, replacing all windows and doors in the process. The builder, a reputable large company, is recommending security glass and not fitting shutters or grills. They claim this is the future and all their new estates are being built like this.

I’ve heard so many horror stories and seen garden videos of thugs robbing places bringing large heavy hammers with them that m skeptical, but I’m no expert. Has anyone any experience of this security glass please?

I just Googled it, it looks pretty impressive, if it is the same glass as in this Youtube video

Id rather not have grids BUT what about leaving Windows open? You've got no protection from opportunists

Great video. I’m waiting for them to send me the spec and which manufacturer they use to investigate further.

That’s a really good point. Like most modern windows I’m hoping they’ll have fixed short opening positions, like tilt inwards maybe - waiting to get the spec.

You’re right though that if you have your windows wide open, not on secure latch, someone could come round the back opportunistically.

Sounds like a good idea, especially if you have to exit via a window due to fire. I've always been a bit wary of the security grills.

I suggest you check with your insurer before making any decisions which could compromise your cover.

There is also the potential effect on any future sale of the property to consider, as secure as it might be claimed to be not everybody will share your confidence.

Lastly don't forget that shutters are not only about security but also serve to control the sun entering the property in a way curtains cannot.

When I had my studio built it was with security glass.
I went to their factory before they built it and they demonstrated with a sheet of glass supported on trestles and hitting it with a sledge hammer which just bounced off.

I think for a window that doesn't need to open it's ideal, but there wouldn't be any advantage in putting it into a window that opens, thieves don't tend to break glass to get into houses in Spain, they usually just force the windows open, so it wouldn't matter what type of glass you use.
