Paying for building work

Paying for building work

Postby Raspberry Blower » Sun Jun 25, 2023 8:24 am

Hello, we should be completing on a property next week and we'd like to know how quotes/payments work here.
We've been seeking quotes for the first job that we'd like to complete,
We've had a cash price quoted that we're not interested in as we'd like some comeback. They've then said if we want an invoice 21% IVA would be added, which we're aware of. Then another 10% has been added for incoming tax. Is that normal practice ? Thank you

Sounds like they were going to do it cash in hand and evade income tax. Because you've asked for paperwork they have to declare it and so they are increasing the price to cover it. Maybe 'normal' in the black economy, but not people I'd be giving any money to.

If your happy with a legal qoute/ estimate,
You need a contract stating both parties obligation,
Stage payment is usualy in the contract, and that act as your guarantee.along with the final invoice

I understand IVA is added but is the 10% incoming tax normal practice ?

No. Never heard of it. Big red flag for me. I expect honesty and transparency from the start with any tradesman, especially if I've not used them before and / or the cost is significant. Sometimes 'needs must' in an emergency, but otherwise I'd be getting alternative quotes. I'd rather pay more to a legal tradesman who is honest upfront. It's not so much the extra 10%, the total price may still seem reasonable, but what else might they be being dishonest about.

Why would you be expected to pay their income tax?

They've quoted an absolute silly low price to try to beat a normal legitimate quote with all the associated guarantees and protection that a legal quote from a registered building company would have to provide.

Might upset some but think travellers and tarmac drives.

The person in question has been recommended on here by many. Thought the 10% was a try on, all it's done is put us off. Seems like a minefield out there

Many crooks about BEWARE !!!!
Word of mouth recommendation helps some of the time - but not all of the time.

What can you do if you have a dispute?
