Powdery mark on inner wall
Powdery mark on inner wall
by J&RSpain » Wed Jun 15, 2022 11:44 am
Hi
We have discovered a powdery line on an inner wall of our holiday home. It doesn’t feel damp and we can find no sign of damp having looked from underneath in the area under the house. Any ideas anyone??! Thanks (photo attached)

Definitely moisture causing the paint to blister. We have exactly same on a garden wall. Different opinions as to the best way to deal with it as it generally always comes back when repainted. Most common solution is tiling over it. Good luck

We had that at the back of the bed just above he skirting, ours was lack of ventilation as I had plastic boxes underneath the bed. Ours was just humidity

Clean it with bleach, let it dry out then repaint.

It’s definitely being caused by water. Is there a bathroom near that wall? Could water be lying on the floor and penetrating the wall from the other side?
Rub the water mark down and remove all traces of the flakey paint. Buy UPVC glue ( Chinese shops white thick gum in various sized plastic bottles)
Costs about €3.99. I use a mop bucket and mix 1 part glue with 5 parts water. Mix well and coat the wall. Allow to dry well. I then add some more into my paint and this actually helps to spread the paint. Your wall should now be sealed .
Please try to find out where the damp is coming from. Could be a leak. Need to find out though.

We had something similar in our north facing downstairs spare bedroom although it did feel slightly damp. Noticed our nieghbours had air bricks in their under building & we didn’t.
Davinia Construcian fitted some impressive ventilation to our under building & never had a problem since. Bleach, etc may work but that’s not getting to the route cause.
Good luck.

This is known as efflorescence. It's basically salts left behind after the wall has been damp but since dried out, leaving this powdery substance behind. Scrape it all off, brush the area thoroughly and wash it with clean water. Use bottle water as removing all the salt will take time. Leave it a couple of weeks, if no sign of the problem returns, then treat it with an epoxy based damp guard. If there's no obvious sign of what caused it then it's likely there was water used during the building with a high salt content.
