Source of hot water

Source of hot water

Postby Raspberry Blower » Fri May 19, 2023 9:43 pm

Hi. Once we get the keys to our 2 bed/2 shower bungalow we need to change the old bottle fed gas boiler. The bungalow will be a holiday home for personal use only for probably 6-8 weeks of the year.
Should we install a new bottle fed gas boiler and how much does a bottle of gas cost ? Or should we install an electric water heater/cylinder. My only concern with the cylinder is having stagnant water over periods of time.
Any advice would be welcome. Thank you

Id just replace the boiler those electric ones tend to spring a leak after a while. A gas bottle is around 16-20 euros depending which one you go for

We get Cepsa lightweight ones and yes they're more expensive but the Repsol orange ones are cheaper

I agree, in the circumstances an instant gas boiler would be the best option although sized to cater for both showers being used at the same time. Possibly consider installing separate ones for each.

For the best price for gas you need to buy direct from a Repsol outlet where they are price controlled, typically that means a Repsol petrol station.

Note some petrol stations may stock Repsol bottles but are not actually Repsol so will charge more plus it's only the orange bottles depicted which are price controlled, lightweight bottle prices will be at the sellers discretion.

Re butane v propane, because of the differing calorific values of the two the amount of actual energy you get from each measured in MJ/kg all but cancels out the price differential.

I use propane (recommended for water heaters) and as far as I recall the most I've ever paid for a bottle was around €17.

We have a bottle fed gas water heater & wouldn't want to change it.
As much instant hot water as and when you want. No chance of shower going cold because you run out of storage - although if the gas runs out during shower it's annoying!
The gas also supplies our range of 4 burners .
We live here permanently & we only use about 4 or 5 cylinders a year.

I agree with Martin we live here full time and we use two bottles of gas for hot water and just over one bottle for the hob which is great.

If you want cheaper you have to get the heavy ones Repsol, not Cepsa
