Underbuild renovation cost

I know it’s a broad question but is converting your underbuild expensive. Average size 3 bed.
Is planning difficult to overcome?

Underbuilds can not be lived in legally due to the height to the ceiling unless you dig the floor out then you will undermine the foundations of the property

Any idea of costs

Hi. We had a couple of builders price our under build for a full height construction which involved extending the ring beams, stairway outside, windows, door and grills
Also all legal paperwork from the town hall and architectural drawings were included.
Prices ranged from 19,000 to 21,000.

Please be aware of the safety aspect even if you get permission.

It would be unfortunate to be in an underbuild room if there was a fire upstairs and there was only one way out and grills on the windows. Not only would you (or your family) be toasted to death but most likely the insurance would not cover you for the loss of life or house.

Just worth thinking about, although I do know many people who do use basements for bedrooms, but to me it's a bit scary.

Yeah that thought crossed my mind in general as all windows seem to have grills. I would factor a door in the underbuild or access and exit !!

Good luck in getting planning permission

You get a concentina grill and have the key hanging nearby. That's what we did with the garage conversion.
