Is there a specific level of insurance cover needed in order to gain residency do you know?
Thanks

Not much help but the British consulate website says:
Public or private health insurance contracted in Spain or in another country, provided that it ensures cover in Spain during their period of residence equivalent to the cover provided by the National Health System.

First year requires a certain level of health insurance in order to satisfy requirements for residency?
That is what we've read?
Approx - £1,800 per couple for first year?
Not 100% sure what to believe?
Would REALLY love some info and experience and advice - please

Obviously the cost of health insurance will vary depending on age, health history and so on.
I've read two sites which quote around €800 a year for a couple in their early 50s yet another couple of sites that quote around €1500 a year for the same couple.
Pretty sure the only way you could get a straight answer would be from the insurance company itself.
Sanitas is a part of BUPA and will quote you online Sanitas
Then there's ASSSA who will call you to discuss this.
Also contact an independent insurance agency who will probably be able to give you more options.
Best of luck.

Just read on the NHS / Gov website that EU nationals who waltz into the UK merely need to 'sign up' for completely free and full access to British healthcare...
This all seems more than a little one sided to me?

Not sure that’s strictly true. My understanding is that it’s a mutual arrangement and the NHS should claim back from the residing country but just don’t bother.

UK NHS is residency based. Spain is contribution based (like most other EU countries). Once you have an address in UK and start paying utility bills you will be classed as ordinary resident (they are tightening up on the rules but a bit late, I guess).
If you look at some comments by a NHS Director several years ago, he stated that even giving the address of a friend would you get you classed as resident for health purposes.
In Spain you have to have paid into the system before you can get anything out. That applies to Spaniards as well. However, just one person in the household needs to be paying in for everyone to be covered.
If you are classed as self employed (automono) in Spain you will get the social security number and all in your household will receive medical care. But you have to pay the contributions of around €265 a month whether you make a profit or not.

For members who are in the convenio especial scheme, has anyone else experienced the scheme taking out double payments this month, or is this just a mistake on our account only.
I understand that the Spanish government is scrapping this along with other schemes, to allow free healthcare for all residents. I thought this change was imminent.
