This link is better than the last one I posted as it deals specifically with Spain

why do you want a spanish ehic card as it is not valid for use in spain

if under state uk pension age to register as a resident in spain you have to provide proof of income and healthcare cover
unless you are in receipt of an exportable uk benefit.

as a non resident you can obtain a temp healthcard but this only allows doctors appointments

you cannot become self employed ( autonomo ) unless you are registered as a resident and submitting tax returns

The question at the start of this topic was was "How quick/easy is it to obtain a Spanish EHIC once becoming resident ?"
As far as I know anyone who is Resident in any EU country can get an EHIC card to use in other EU countries for holidays and temporary stays.

Hi, been reading all comments on getting a EHIC card, I am at moment on a merry go round trying to get one.!!!!. I am 59, not working, husbands is 67,my husband joined the Spanish health care, and got his SIP card and a EPIC card sent from uk. I then was added as a dependant or piggy backing (or what ever they call it) on him.we went to rojales with all the paperwork and I have my SIP card but no EHIC card. This is now one year or more ago.have been onto england with no joy, can't do on line as asked you to be uk resident, even tho uk are paying for the health care ?....I have got a doctor and have used the system with no problems so can only assume the uk are paying and paperwork has been processed.on my last call to see if they would send me a card they said they could not , and but said to rejoin the Spanish system again so the paper work could be sent to them again#####. That is the most ridiculous idea , knowing the Spanish system of problems over this I will not be going down that route, yes I don't need a EHIC card in valencia but I do if I go any where else in Europe. When I asked england what would happen if I needed treatment in England while on holiday they said to ring them , great if you are able....any help would be much appreciated....

yes as a resident in spain you can obtain a spanish ehic card but only if you are paying social security and are included in the spanish healthcare system, you can be a resident in spain using private heathcare but you cannot get an spanish ehic card. unlike the uk where healthcare is based on residency in spain and most eu countries it is based on contributions to the system. so to obtain a residents certificate if under state retirement age you have to provide proof of healthcare or a verifiable contract of employment.

becoming self employed is not as simple as getting a social security number and setting up a direct debit for the monthly payment, you have to register and declare at the tax office.

you can get lots of help and advice on this and other forums, but as each persons circumstances are never quite the same always seek professional guidance

My wife and i are both receiving uk aged pension and are now living permanently in Rojales.
How do we get S1 forms, do we have to ring intermational pensions in Newcastle ?

Yes. If you ring Newcastle they will need your NI numbers and will ask a few questions. They will then send the completed forms to you in Spain. Then take them to the town hall in Rojales and the lady there will give you a temporary healthcard and process the forms for you. Take a copy of the completed S1 before you go as you don't get a copy back. You also have to have an in date (within the last 3 months) padron certificate which you can get upstairs in the town hall.
Your permanent health card will be available from the same lady in about 2 months time.
