Health Card Info

Just a word of advice to anyone who has a SIP card like the one in the first photo below. I went to the farmacia this week to pick up my husband's repeat prescription. The man in the farmacia said he could not give me the prescription as my husband's card had expired. As he has had the card since 2005 I was surprised that there was an expiry.
Yesterday we went to the main Centro de Salud in Campello (not our small local one) and the receptionist said we had to change our SIP cards to ones with the bar code (as in the second photo).
She did this for us both in just a couple of minutes. Although this renewal was easy enough I was a bit upset that we had not been informed about this. If my husband had been in need of urgent health care it could have been quite serious to find he was not covered by his SIP card.
We then went back to the farmacia for his prescription but they said his repeat was no longer there and that he needs to go to our GP to have his prescription put back on.
I suggest everyone checks their SIP card and, if you have one without a bar code, go to your Centro de Salud and have it changed. Also, if you have any repeat prescriptions, check they are still there.

E111 is now the EHIC European Health Insurance Card, so there is such a thing with a name change.

It can be used in any European country, for Emergency or medically necessary treatment whilst abroad, other than the home country where the EHIC was obtained.

Here's the info for the UK card:
