Looking for some Healthcare advise. Myself and the missus are looking at moving out to Spain in the next couple of years on a permanent basis. We are looking at retiring early and do not plan on working in Spain once we have moved out. I will be 55 and the missus will be 50. Not sure what is the best option for Healthcare. Your advise will be greatly appreciated.

Private and full cover with no exclusions for preexisting conditions and no co-payments (excess),no other choice.
After one year a month you may be able to sign up for Convio Especial for which you'll pay a monthly fee but it doesn't cover the cost of medicines which you will have to pay for at full price.
I say 'may' because nobody knows if that option will survive beyond Dec 31st.

We retired early and moved out here at 58 and 55 respectively. You'll need PHI for your Residencia applications - ours is with ASSSA. For our Standard Plus cover with ASSSA, we pay Eu 870 p.a. each - ASSSA guarantees no age-related increase in premium, so although we're now 62 and 59, the cost of our cover hasn't increased since we took it out almost 4 years ago. Cover for your wife should be cheaper, as she's in the next age category down.
The Convenio Especial, assuming we can still access it once the Brexit transition is complete, currently costs Eu 60 per person, per month; once you reach age 65, that increases to Eu 157 per person, per month. As with PHI, it doesn't cover prescription costs, but unlike PHI, it does cover pre-existing conditions. We considered switching to the Convenio Especial, but decided to stick with the PHI until we know for sure what will be available to us after the transition period.

We have had cover with ASSSA for almost 20 years & were very happy until i had a minor operation (approved by ASSSA) i spent one night in hospital & then had to go to Quiron twice a week for my dressing changed, nothing else, for about 6 weeks, again all well & over the moon with the treatment & ASSSA in general, until our renewal came for the following year, my wife had the customary cost of living increase to her policy, mine however increased by 25%, the reason, i had used too many vouchers during the previous year. The vouchers as i say were used for cleansing & dressing AFTER they had approved the operation. Knocked my confidence in the company if, god forbid, anything more serious were to happen.
