Is there a SIP Card for non-resident?

Re: Is there a SIP Card for non-resident?

A few years ago my daughter came over with her boyfriend who had, trapped his finger in the UK the day before. He was advised by nurses here that he could receive treatment free and came over to Quesada. We went to the Health centre in Rolajes with his EHIC and was given a temporary SIP which he used at the medical centre under Quesada town hall. No questions asked. I have not yet had the pleasure of using services in Spain in the years I have travelled but am of the understanding that I am entitled to these under the EU reciprocal agreement. Whether or not I am up to date with my name on the padron.
Hope this helps,
Julie :)

[quote="Martin the artist"]An EHIC only covers emergency treatments.

The EHIC card is not just for emergencies. Sorry I'm not trying to split hairs here but I don't want people to be put off from going to the local health centre. I think it is better described as a tempory SIP card for visitors. It entitles you to see a doctor for routine medical services too, if you are here for a few weeks and can't see your GP at home. For example, A member of my family had blocked up ears due to a build up of wax and we are not back in the UK for a few weeks. This is clearly uncomfortable but cannot be described as an emergency. We went to the Lo Maribu Health Centre and I was amazed at the ease and speed of the service. On production of the EHIC card the patient was quickly on the system and issued with a temporary SIP card. Having to wait for between 3/4 weeks for a Drs appointment in the UK, and nearly as long for the nurse, we were astonished to get an appointment with the doctor 15 minutes later! He was welcoming and helpful and after an examination recommended a syringe clean in 4 days time and an appointment was duly made with a nurse who carried out the treatment.
The doctor told us to come back if there were any further problems and there was absolutely no suggestion we should not be there - in fact he told us off for seeking help at the Farmacia first before coming to him.
I had half expected to be turned away and told to use my insurance - I couldn't have been more wrong! I think it is the Spanish who can be proud of their NHS. I hope this example will give people a clearer idea of their options when they need medical help.
