Retiring to spain: What happens if the UK leaves the EU?
Re: Retiring to spain

Personally if I were you I would stay in the UK and come over here for 6 months at a time and rent somewhere to stay. Spain is not all its cracked up to be and I would go back tomorrow if I could sell my house. I wish I had stayed in the UK and visited.

We have friends who left uk twelve years ago. One of them has been lucky enough to have employment throughout that time and paid into Spanish system.
They are both very happy, and have English friends as well as Spanish.
My friend learnt spanish over several years before they left for spain.
It hasn't been a completely smooth ride, however they say they would not come back to uk.
As for me and my other half well we have our holiday home now, but we are going to do
What Lulu advises and split our time between both uk and Spain, but for us that's about ten years away. I suppose everyone's experience is different.

Some people are never happy no matter what they do, no matter what happens life it is not a dressed rehearsal just look into everything you can and make the most of your decision best of all think positively to get the most out of any situation. However I would advise do not cut all ties if you can keep some ware to go back to if you need rather than staying with relatives etc. we have a static caravan and another friend of mine has a caravan in storage that he can have sited for his return which works very well in case of the need to return, although its been sunny lately it will be along wet winter in the UK so buy willies!!!

Yes, everyone's experience is different as blackvelvet says and for some it's a great life and others, as Lulu has said, may be better coming and going to Spain instead of moving over completely and it is good advice too not to go burning bridges if at all possible.
As has been said many times on this forum before, renting for a while before buying is also good advice - Then you can get to know the areas, way of life and the different seasons before deciding to move over completely.
Are willies a longer version of wellies scubydoo?

We all make spelling misakes - It's no problem. Just the 'willies' made me laugh!

I would advise you to give some serious thought to the time when you may be too frail to look after yourself/selves and/or when one of you falls off his/her perch.
For all their faults I think the UK Social Services provide more support for those in such situations than you'll get in Spain.
Will you have sufficient income to purchase private care in Spain?
Just something to think about, IMO, rather than to put it out of your mind 'until later' ... later might be too late.
Good luck with whatever you decide on.

We have also been fortunate enough to retire here before pension age. We have private health cover and pay approx 1800€ for both of us a year.We have temporary SIP cards which we renew every months. This gives us a local GP and reduce prescription charges. We use the Quiron hospital on the way to Torrevieja and I have recently undergone some tests and they have been excellent. I also have disclosed to the insurance that I have Glaucoma, I was flying back to the UK every 6 months for appts. I went to Quiron, had thorough checks and only paid 80€ which covers me for the follow up appt. Much cheaper than flying back!!!

You can use your EHIC card in UK, we did when my husband had to have some stitches out that were put in here in Spain just before we went back to UK. We used to get our EHIC card from Spain very easily on the spot, but now we have to send to the UK for it, so now have to wait for it to arrive!
