Some good news on pensioner healthcare post Brexit
Some good news on pensioner healthcare post Brexit
by Shiva » Fri Sep 01, 2017 10:25 am
Amid what seems to be the general chaos, shambles and acrimony that currently exemplifies the negotiations , one small glimmer of hope for British residents in Spain on health care post-Brexit - this morning The Times reported ( in an otherwise pretty gloomy article) that agreement has been reached on residents' right to access health care ( really affects pensioners I think ) - seems to suggest that pensioner residents will be able to continue to access the Spanish Health Care system as now ( and use an EHIC if they travel elsewhere in the EU).
Not clear that it will apply to people moving after Brexit but at least some good news for current pensioner residents . See extract below.
“HEALTHCARE RIGHTS
Healthcare is of particular significance to Britons who have retired to France and Spain. Both sides have agreed to protect healthcare rights for UK citizens living in the EU and EU citizens living in the UK. A British pensioner in France, for example, will continue to be able to get treatment where they live free of charge and if they travel to another EU member state they will be able to continue to use their European health insurance card (EHIC). However, there is no agreement on British citizens in general being allowed to use their EHIC cards after Brexit.” The Times 1 September 2017

Silly question, BUT did I read somewhere if you become a Spanish resident you should change your UK EHIC card to a Spanish EHIC card?

If your healthcare is provided by your home country via the S1 then your home country also provides the EHIC. You can only get the Spanish equivalent (TSE) if you work here/are self employed and are on the social security system or you have taken out citizenship.
When you get to pensionable age, the overseas medical team will send you the application forms to apply for the EHIC.

cheers Marcliff, you are a mine of information.
I don't know where I heard about changing the EHIC but if/when Brexit comes in then I guess the UK EHIC is doomed unless your host country accepts its use.

You do have to change the EHIC but it becomes one that is valid anywhere outside Spain including UK. However, it is issued by UK.
If you think about it, if you had a Spanish TSE then Spain would get billed for your medical care if you used it somewhere else.
Not sure if it will be doomed after Brexit. This is still part of the ongoing discussions. The way the politicians seem to be stumbling along at the moment we won't know for some time.

Seems that there is a lot of hype over this...
but according to the BBC all that has been agreed so far about health for UK citizens abroad is that we will still be able to use the EHIC...
Gosh...
after all this time, what with the Irish border crossing, the Brexit divorce bill, immigration. trade and tariffs etc.. all they have agreed so far is that we can still use EHICs
Well, golly gosh...
.. We have a long way to go..

All of this seems very premature to me.
We're still at the negotiating stage, and while agreement may have been reached on the draft terms surrounding some reciprocal healthcare issues, these terms will be dependent on the whole of the exit package being agreed by both sides.
All of this could go out the window if we don't agree to pay the €60 billion EU divorce settlement.
It's a bit like saying that we've agreed who will get the CD collection and who will have the dog, when we can't agree on who gets the house and how much maintenance will be paid. The trivial stuff is irrelevant if you can't agree the details on the big stuff.
Pete.

Surely this should all have been agreed before the referendum? How can a vote be taken if you don't know what is being voted for?

Totally agree.. this is a total shambles... it seems the UK want to leave the club but want all the benefits of being a member..
...and when the EU disagree the UK say it´s the EU to blame..
...exactly WHO is to blame??

I blame David Cameron for agreeing a referendum without knowing what was being voted for. Staying in or coming out of what?
