Stroke victim

Stroke victim

Postby Mike B » Sat Dec 10, 2022 5:11 pm

Hi all, Just need some advice. My wife has suffered a severe stroke and after spending time in UCI and Torrevieja hospital, she is now at home. but I am paying a Physio to come 3 times a week costing 90€, at the moment a carer 5 days a week at a cost of 85€ and the rental of a hospital bed at 100€ a month. I was surprised that the hospital doesn't offer anything. I am on a limited amount of money, so god knows what will happen when that runs out. a care association is applying for attendance allowance for me but no idea how much that will be. Anybody been in this position and is able to help, I would appreciate some advice. thank you for taking the time to read this.

Oh you poor thing what a nightmare for both of you. You could try Cunningham nurses, they provided a hospital bed for my friends husband free of charge I believe. I wonder if Age concern could advice you on how to get help and also Help Vega Baja. Give them all a call.

Contact The Stroke Association who will be able to help with exercise rehabilitation.

Paul and Maria will come to your home, unless your wife is mobile then you could go to their premises in Rojales for exercise and physiotherapy, although reading your post it doesn't sound like that would be possible at the moment.

My friends husband had a stroke a year ago and without their help, advice and support he wouldn't be as far forward in his recovery as he is now.

My friend was granted attendance allowance, I think it's in the region of £400, but not completely sure on that.

Also Help Vega Baja are a good organisation in situations like this.

Paul is English, his wife Maria is Spanish.

Paul No.653 588 475
Maria No. 620 907 474

I sincerely hope they can help you, they are lovely, lovely dedicated people, I have seen what this situation can do to the partners of stroke victims, its totally exhausting and with a lack of readily available information a lonely place to be.

I wish you and your wife all the very best, stay strong, don't forget you're on the road to recovery now.

The Spanish aren’t as far forward as the U.K. regarding aftercare for things such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, strokes etc because it’s generally accepted that they will be looked after by family at home and most families have some sort of insurance. I was told this by a Spanish doctor.

Hi… care and equipment is expensive here… think you should be able to get a better deal on hospital bed. Try asking for a long term hire.
Attendance Allowance is around the £87 per week… can’t remember exactly. That’s the top amount which gets paid monthly.. you can have it paid into bank here if needed…
Try the Costa Care page on Facebook you can often pick up good used equipment at reasonable prices…
Good luck

My partner was getting 419. 30 euros a month for attendance allowance, he only received it for a couple of months before he died.He had his leg amputated and the only help we received was a prescription for a wheelchair which we had to pay for and then claim back. Sadly I doubt he will ever receive it as it usually takes up to 6 months to receive it and hiss bank account will now be closed.

Hi. Was your friend a resident in Spain? Can you claim attendance allowance from the UK?

Yes, you can claim AA in Spain even if you have lived here for many years.

The only difficulty is the form that you have to fill out. It is about 40 pages long and asks lots of personal questions (like how often does someone help you to the toilet etc).. But just do it!, if she needs it she should get it..... get the form and slug away. Be truthful. If it asks.. do you need any help to have a bath (and you NEED help but don't have it you can say "YES").. a raised toilet seat is classed as help, a rail in the bathroom is classed as help, if you have to help her to bath.. that is help.

You have the opportunity to say in your own words how she needs help. And don't forget, she can use the money any way she wishes.
