What is the health cover for non retirement aged people?

Provided you have legal work and pay social security (similar to NI) then yes.
The same if you are autonomo (self employed) and paying the contributions.
Only one member of the household needs to pay contributions if you are married.

If your husband is pensionable age, he will automatically be covered and so will you as his spouse.
No need for private medical insurance!
ALSO Valencia has just announced it will now be offering free health care to everyone that has residencia for more than 3 months too.

I don't think he would be "automatically" covered. The only way to do it is to transfer your healthcare from UK to Spain via the S1 form. Without that you cannot obtain a SIP card (although see other posts regarding Rojales town hall issuing temporary ones).

I'm sorry but that is not correct.
My wife was of retirement age when we came out whilst I was not.
But when we applied for temp SIP cards I was given one automatically which is the 'norm'.
It was a few years befoe we did transfer our primary care to Spain with S1 form - which again was dealt with by the woman on the health desk in Rojales & did not need us to visit to Orihuela NSS office etc.

If you are retired the UK will cover you for approx. two years after retirement check with them. If you receive a private pension get a translator and go to the Tax office in torrevieja if you are in this area. You present them with the details of your private pension and you will be given a SIP card. when you reach State retirement age you go back and the card will be changed. The first card they give you will qualify you for all health care and when you are an Old Age Pensioner the change in SIP card just means that you pay less for prescriptions. Both me and my husband did this and we have enjoyed full health care here. I have just received my state pension so need to go back to change it. If you want the name of the translator I used who also made the appointment and took us PM me.

Sorry, that was all cancelled in April last year. It was called the residual S1 healthcare and was based on the amount of NI contributions you paid in UK in the years up to retirement. No longer the case.

Residual Healthcare

And, Martin, as you said "it was a few years". I'm afraid things change. When we came over we were exactly the same and were allowed to sign on the padron without residency. I did say this still happened in Rojales town hall but other places will not allow you to sign on the padron unless you have a residency card.
Even the UK consulate website now advises you that you need to be a resident before empadronamiento. That Rojales still allows it (I believe) is contrary to that but, like most things here, people have their own version of what is, and isn't, right. Even town hall staff read into the instructions what they want to read.

Empadronarse
If you live in the Rojales catchment area, the lady at Rojales town hall will do everything for you and she really is very, very helpful. However, the temporary SIP card will only give you access to a GP and you will not get any reductions in prescription charges.
Anyone coming over for a year should contact the overseas healthcare team at Newcastle
Phone 0191 218 1999 (Monday to Friday 8am-5pm).
They will complete the S1 for you and send it to your address in Spain. Then sign on the padron and take the forms to the lady at the town hall. Your full health cover, including reduced cost prescriptions, will be transferred.
No need for an interpreter as the lady in Rojales speaks passable English.

Only those over state pension age in their own country, children under 18 and those registered disabled are entitled to free healthcare in Spain unless they are working and paying social security contributions.

On the other hand, try the lady at Rojales town hall who will do what she can for you.
