Insurance add new clause - alternatives?
Insurance add new clause - alternatives?
by RH1 » Thu Dec 22, 2016 11:11 pm
We have been with our household/ buildings insurers for 14 years - now we see they have introduced a minimum temperature requirement. Does anyone know of alternatives at a reasonable cost without this clause please?
TIA

It is Intasure - if the property is unoccupied Dec to Feb and water tank and pipes not drained OR maintained at 59F!
Also will not cover the first £500 of damage during this period for escape of water if property unlived in for more than 48hrs during this period! And this is supposed to be a holiday home insurance.....

We are with Intasure too but as it's a holiday home there should not be a problem with water if the mains water is turned off from the outside box in street, as well as inside.
If there happened to be a leak it would only be the standing water in the pipes if there is any.
We also always leave a very large container under our water heater in the kitchen in case of a leak there.
We are pleased with Intasure as they are one of the few companies who automatically cover for earthquakes (with an excess of course!). The Spanish company we used for a number of years didn't cover at all and we didn't find this out until using them for years. When we asked about this they said if it happens we can claim from a government fund...Yeh right..wonder how long that would take to come through with everyone claiming??
I expect Intasure are covering themselves against those who don't take precautions when leaving the property empty.

how much is an annual insurance policy? either in euros or sterling, thanks.
also, the minimum temp of 59F / 15'C, is irrelevant, even if they had set it much lower, no matter what policy you may have had, it would have to be an extreme 'frost' before any damage would occur. I would have the thought the likelihood of damage to pipes from adverse weather was nil, when was the last time Spain saw frost? it may happen, but, enough to damage pipes, I doubt it.
No matter what policy anyone gets, there are bound to be clauses in them that tease our fear factors of ...what if??.
as one of you has already mentioned, a little bit of preparation before you lock up for winter can make a massive difference, even if its just in peace of mind.
thanks
