Insurance cover and claims

Insurance cover and claims

Postby neil_hamilton1 » Wed Mar 29, 2017 10:13 am

I am posting some information relating to my insurance claim and how it has been finalised.

In November 2016 we were the subject of a robbery at home and a leather handbag and contents were stolen.
The police (Local and Gardia) attended and I had to make a denuncia to go with my insurance claim.

At every turn it seems that the insurer (Liberty Seguras) tried to wriggle out of paying the claim. This ranged from some spurius clause from the depths of the Tand C’s limiting the payment of lost cash to the need for a receipt for everything lost to prove ownership.

I understand that they would try to mitigate their loss but having found packaging (back in the UK) and produced UK and Spanish bank statements showing where and when items were purchased they still tried to omit the items.
After being offered a ‘’full and final’’ settlement they then added insult to injury with this advice from the broker

‘’In addition Liberty will be writing to you to advise that as a result of this claim they have cancelled your policy at renewal and as of 4th June you will no longer be on cover.’’

No thanks for the years of custom, just p*** off now you need help.

So folks beware – pay your premiums but on no account make a claim. If we had no insurance and banked the premiums I could have replaced the lost items and still have been in profit. If you do take out a policy keep every receipt going or try to find those from items purchased a long time ago or bought in the UK.
Whilst the broker has initially tried to be helpful in the end they have just cow towed to their paymaster insurance company and washed their hands of everything.

I will not be using either the broker or insurance company again.

Sorry for what might seem a rant but others may have experienced similar issues.

I am having continuing problems with Liberty Segura although my broker SGM lawyers are doing their best and are having partial success. I have now changed companies.

At least with Silvia Galve on the case a positive outcome is always possible.
Good luck maisiesdad

Cheers Neil. Is there not an insurance arbitration service that could help you out?

Dont know of one in Spain, in UK the Ombudsman could arbitrate.
How do you talk to these people though? English bank account shows purchase as 399 sterling - they say they will pay 399 Euros. No calculation for any exchange rate, which at time of purchase was about 1.4 so insurer should have paid 559 Euros

Hey, i had storm damage last december; was officially accepted because of high winds and exceptionally heavy rainfall.
Claimed to Liberty and they send an expert. Didn't hear anything for weeks. Went to the office and there they said i was informed it wasn't covered because of bad house maintenance ( ??? ) I contacted our community insurance and they send also an expert who said it was absolutely covered and the findings of Liberty was ...... ( censored ). So i stopped instantly my insurance with Liberty and contracted the other, who in return completely covered the damage. Within the week after it was all repaired.
So far my experience with Liberty....

There is an insurance omudsman in Spain who you can go to the same as the uk you can find the information on the Citizens Advice page this is the link https://www.citizensadvice.org.es/faq/h ... ombudsman/

We have had a very bad experience with Linea Direct and claim for a car accident they treated us despicably and the accident wasn't even our fault. Seems like there is nit a lit to chose between any of them other than the premium yoy pay.
