Hi Bellajane

If you are going to be hiring a car for less than 30 days at a time maybe think about an annual hire care insurance policy that you can easy get from a quick search on the internet, we paid £45 for 2 of us for a year, this should help with the cost as you will have fully comp cover.

Thanks Dessert queen, I shall look into that today!
The initial price of hiring the car for a week through "doyouSpain" was only €28 but then they added €90 for a full (to empty) tank of fuel,€55 for fully comp and €30 as I was picking up in La Siesta and dropping off at the airport!
It came to €203 in the end and I handed it back with half a tank full of petrol!
In future I shall pick up and drop off at the airport, try and get a "full to full" deal and arrange my own insurance!
I'm learning slowly but surely! Lol! :-)

Hi Dessertqueen ,

Do you mean excess insurance or some other annual hire insurance? We have annual excess car hire insurance but it doesn't cover the car/driver for the actual fully comprehensive insurance as that should come with the car. Excess insurance covers the car for things that may be charged for, over and above the normal insurance, such as damage to windows/roof/tyres/keys etc. However it doesn't include damage to the interior of the car - apparently, we have only recently found out that no car hire insurance covers the interior (which is now something we check extra carefully on collection of our cars).

To be fully covered with the excess company, the car must be fully insured from the off with the hire company. The extra that doesn't need to be paid for, is what is generally called the 'Top up' insurance with the hire company for windows/roof etc - The annual excess insurance will pay for these if they are damaged and any excess on the insurance that the hire company may charge the driver in the event of an accident/damage. The excess charged by each hire-car company differs but is in the small print (VERY small print usually!!) on the paperwork when collecting the car.

It's very difficult and frustrating trying to find what is or what is not covered in the hire price by each hire company and the annual excess insurance cover is dependant on the car being fully insured. The time I've looked at websites trying to decipher the small print and find that often what isn't covered by the hire-price is not even on there....wonder why!!

Sorry if I'm repeating what you know, Dessertqueen, but it can be confusing to newbies.

Jan.

Hi bellajanie,
It has always been confusing and it's amazing how many people, including us in the early days, unknowingly have driven hire cars under-insured with only the basic legal insurance. Just by sheer luck things turned out OK for us, but now we try to always make sure we are covered for everything and don't get any 'surprise' charges!

We go for about 28 to 30 days at a time and find that hiring for just one week often suits us - While we have the car we stock up on heavy supermarket shopping, go to a market and the beaches and, after we give the car back, we chill out at home and we walk or use the buses if we need to go anywhere. A shopping trolley on wheels is helpful if you have a long walk to market or supermarket.

For a short hire we found it's best to use the car-hire companies that only charge for a small amount of petrol in the tank and those that can be collected at the airport and dropped off in Quesada or the other way around. We use Opencar who are based in Quesada near the petrol station - You can always go and chat to them to find out what you need to know. I think (?) they can collect or bring the car to your house if you ask, but other companies probably offer that service too.

Hope this helps,

Jan.
