Hola Chrissie

My husband & I are also ex-saffer's (Well we were born in UK but lived in SA on the East Rand for over 25yrs) We also due to a 'bad experience' left SA almost 9yrs ago now & went back to the UK, really struggled to settle, came to Spain on a 3 week holiday & said we would love to live here, managed 6yrs in the UK & took the plunge....... Have been in Quesada now for 2yrs & loving life.
Would love to meet up & have a chat, anything we could help with, just ask
Best wishes & Good Luck, Sara :)

Hi Sara

Cool, yes I would definitely love to meet up with you. I lived in Edenvale as a teen, went to Edenglen High School and know the East Rand well. Doesn't Spain also feel a bit like SA in the old days to you? When I was there in June I immediately felt quite at home, despite the language dilemma, and even that felt familiar, as we came from Germany and didn't speak any English or Afrikaans. We all managed then and learned to speak both (well, my brother and I did, my parents just learned the odd word of Afrikaans), so I am sure I can do it again.

I am looking at coming out in October to check out the house and get it ready for my move. The owner is also an ex South African, but he now lives in Ireland.

And I will probably need a little help or advice, as I am all on my own and have a lot of things to organise!

Chat soon

Chrissie
And the adventure continues... :-)

Thanks Alex :D

I am already so confused about all the posts regarding NIE, Residencia, where to pay tax (that's already a problem now, as I live in Germany and work in the UK! And still trying to organise my UK NI number, which turns out to be quite an issue too!) and whether to take my car and bike with me or try to sell them in Germany. Although I would lose quite a bit on the bike as it is brand new, only bought it in May and it only has 1000km on the clock! Maybe I should keep the bike and just sell the car? I am guessing Spain is a lot like South Africa and it doesn't rain as much?
And trying to get quotes to move my stuff down there... it's not a lot, only about 4 or 5cbm...

Reading all the comments has been helpful though.

Hi again Chrissieb,

I can recommend you a friend to help you with all the paperwork, this is their website:

http://sgmlegalspain.com

Silvia has the office in Benijófar, very close to Ciudad Quesada. I work with her in the past, on the same company, and she is one of the best. Contact her to ask your doubts and tell you know me xD

On the other hand, don't worry abut the rain here on the Costa Blanca South!! You will be able to enjoy your bicycle all year around. I have a bicycle too, we can go together some day :)

See you soon!

Thanks for the info. :)

Oh, and it's not a bicycle, it's a motorbike, lol. Thus the worry about bringing it down there and having to re-register it etc. ;)

Hi again.

So my move is getting closer and I still don't have all my ducks in a row! And on top of it I'm stuck working in England until 9th Nov, then I go back to Germany to start packing so I can move at the end of November.

But... I need some more quotes for Movers and I am also still not sure if I can move into the House that was offered to me, as the Owner has still not had time to go and check the house or move his personal stuff out! In the meantime I have to give notice at my place and organise all sorts of things.

Then there is still the issue with the car! If I take it with and keep it running on German plates until I can sell it, how would I go about renewing the license without having to go to Germany to do it? Going to have the same issue with the Motorbike, but since it is new, it may be quite easy to change it over to Spanish plates.
Also, my car is quite old and I do have some worries about tackling such a long trip with it! It doesn't have any known issues, but then again I'm no Mechanic, so what would I know?

There are days when I wish I was not all alone in my adventures.... it just seems easier to do these things if you do it as a couple or with a friend!

But I am determined to do this and I do believe that things will all work out just fine.

Looking forward to meeting some of you in December. :D
