Hola - and cycling buddies needed

Hola - and cycling buddies needed

Postby aliwade71 » Thu Jun 21, 2018 11:51 am

We are looking for a property to buy - coming back out in September for another viewing trip. We have been concentrating on the Northern Costa Blanca - Orba Valley in particular. However, properties are so much more expensive up there and struggling to find something suitable for our current 100k budget. Hubby loves the cycling up there, obviously. If he is to be persuaded to look for a property in CQ, then he needs to have good cycling routes (he goes off for hours - on and off road!) and buddies/groups.

Would love to hear from cyclists in the area.

We live on our dairy farm in Pembrokeshire, but hubby is retiring from that (we are only 47 and 51, but I need the Spanish climate for my health and hubby is fed up of Welsh winters/the stress of running a farm). We are looking for a 2-3 bedroom property (villa or bungalow) with easy access for bicycles, close to the golf course and little road noise (get in touch if you are selling such a property).

Apart from golf and cycling, I am a crafting addict and will be looking for groups/workshops to join in with (or I will be organising them myself), and we are both big F1 fans.

I am learning Spanish, so conversation groups/group lessons would be great.

Help me to persuade hubby with your friendly/helpful replies!!

Ali x

ps I have Fibromyalgia and would love to chat with other Spoonies in the area

The past winter was just horrendous - even in our area of Pembrokeshire, which rarely had snow/frost before. My health is made worse by cold/damp/dark weather. I always feel better when we step off in the plane in Alicante. Hubby can cycle most days in Spain, but in the UK he ends up using his turbo trainer indoors. I bought an electric bicycle here a few years ago, as my doctor had told me that I could not cycle hills without the battery assistance (and there are a lot of hills around here!). I will be hiring one when we are in Spain (and buying one once we are out in Spain more often), and looking forward to exploring in the sunshine. I may be 'only' 47', but I am not able to be as active as I wish due to Fibromyalgia - so would love to meet up for a short bike ride (with cafe stop!) when we are in Spain. Ali x

Hi, we have just brought a holiday apartment in Quesada and I love getting out on road or mountain bike. There are lots of nice quiet road sections (camino roads) and off road trails around the salt lakes or along to Segura river. There is also a cycle path which runs from Quesada to Torrevieja (and probably more places but haven't explored it yet). People in Spain seem a lot more tolerant and respectful of bikes on the road and give plenty of space when overtaking. At the moment I rent a bike when I need it from http://cyclogicalcostablanca.com/. They have a cycle club and accompanied tours. I also picked up a good book from them which has some local routes of various distances and levels. Good luck with your house hunting.

Although I don't cycle it is clearly very big over here. I see lots of individuals and groups when I am out on my (motor)bike. The roads here are very much quieter than in the UK. I love going off into the hills and back-roads exploring.

I used to rent in Calpe every winter and regularly cycle to Orba - that valley can be ..... VERY cold .... compared to the coast.
I now live in Rojales - much better - and the cycling is easier.
Just a FYI - if you want to bring your electric bike over then you'll have to drive over bringing the battery in your car or get a new battery delivered to your Spanish address. Transport companies are no longer permitted to transport used LiPO batteries without prohibitive red tape and certification. If anyone else knows of a legal alternative please advise.

Thank you for all the replies. Yes, we have stayed up in the Jalon and Orba areas in the winter, and it can be very cold if you don't have the sun on you. Still a lot warmer than the UK though! I will contact the cycling groups and get their advice on routes, as hubby really likes to have mountains close by (he is currently preparing to do an Everesting challenge, where you cycle one 'hill' over and over until you have done the height of Everest - mad!!).

Hi Ali
we recently moved to just outside San Miguel and there are always lots of cyclists about, especially at weekends, and there does seem to be a special route on the road out to Rebate.

Will pm about FMS.
