Hi all,

My girlfriend and I had a scouting trip to the Costa Blanca last month to see if we’d like to make the move to Spain and the feeling is we’d really like to do that now and the areas we liked best were Quesada/Dona Pepa, Benimar, Benijófar, and Los Montesinos.

We stayed in Quesada not far from Harry’s Bar and liked the peacefulness of the area and the short walk into the town.

We are both EU passport holders, so the plan is to source possible homes by Jan and come over and see the shortlist and make a purchase in Feb. I shall be quitting my job then and will decide what to do with my property in the UK (sell or rent out)

I guess one of the first things I will need to do is find an independent lawyer to assist with the purchase and guide me through any potential nightmares. I am currently learning Spanish via Babble and would love to be much improved come February.

I’m not near retirement age so I’d love to get a little job which would supplement my pension and help pay for my golf club fees and petrol!

Any help or advice you can offer is most welcome!

Best,

Mac

Morning Mac..

We used a company called SGM Abogados ( Office in Benijofar) with our house/villa purchase back in Feb this year. Great services provided by them. We dealt with Charlotte ( British but born here so fluent in both English & Spanish.

All the Best Duncan ( Mac too..)

For lawyers ( and a good independent lawyer is essential ) I'd recommend SGM Abogados in Benijofar. You'll see that many on the forum recommend them. They'll keep you right.

Also, just a separate point to consider re your uk property, just bear in mind that if you put off selling it until after you become tax resident in Spain you may be subject to Spanish capital gains tax on its sale. Depends on your personal circumstances, obviously, but if you have made a significant gain it may be better selling it before you change tax jurisdiction.

SGM Abogados all day long. I've been with them for 20 years in total. For buying and selling and all tax related matters.

Search for a ‘lawyer’ not a solicitor, yes they both do the same job but from my own findings, a lawyer has the qualifications to back it up.. Also, separate to the selling agent too. Find the lawyer “before” you even look for a property, that way you have them on board at the very beginning, to have a legal money trail right for the start. Although I’m sure it can’t be every legal advice company, There is a definite undercurrent of corruption, that I can’t prove, maybe the same as any other country, so in my view find a “lawyer”. Check the gov.U.K. Website for recommendations. I appreciate others may disagree with this, but it is the best advice I can give.

Also if possible raise all monies in your home country, much easier to understand if or when discrepancies occur, and much less likely to cost as much. I appreciate that may not be possible if you are severing homeland ties.

Having said that, great decision, I wish I’d done it years earlier myself. Good luck.
