Hi all
Live in UK but looking to buy in quesada this site is brill and full of info. Can anyone tell me what areas are flatter I don't mind some incline but have a knee that plays up at times so hilly not good. Seen the maps but can someone give me the road names i should avoid if hilly .There are so many things I want to ask as still in early stages of research but keep being drawn to CQ. There are one or two things I am struggling with firstly cockroaches secondly mozzies as they like me. I am quite squimish about these critters .Did a anyone else feel like that before moving out from UK. And are they a real big problem.

Hi,
:text-welcomewave:
Welcome to the forum - Glad you like the site!

I'm sure you will get lots of help and advice on here.

I think most people are squeamish about Cockroaches but luckily we all have our own ways of keeping them out of our houses. You will see them outside in hot weather but we've found with mosquito netting on the door grills, windows and vents, and spraying around the inside of the house and the entrances with a spray called ORO, which lasts for up to a year, is the best way to help keep them out. (Even those small vents in the ceiling of bathrooms and near the floor in kitchens can be covered with a piece of netting and sticky velcro - The netting & velcro can be bought in any hardware/ Ferreteria store - 'Jaquelines' near the arches is good for this)

I also find that the old fashioned ant powder (which also kills cockroaches) is good to put under the 'kick boards' in the kitchen and under all appliances like fridges & washing machines.
Before we had mosquito netting on the windows, one hot night a cockroach flew in and started flying around the bedroom, scared the living daylights out of me!
We can all get the odd cockroach who will find it's way in somehow, no matter what you do, but usually they will be found dead somewhere as the spray or powder will have killed them after a short while. I can honestly say that we have only had about three in the house, that we have known about, since being there 9 years. We don't live there so the house is shut up a lot of the year - Those that live there may get a few more but with preventative measures they can be kept to an absolute minimum.

Hopes this helps put your mind at rest.

As for mosquitoes, just a tip - If you like sitting out on your porch or in your garden at night, it's best not to have greenery or plants growing near where you will be sitting as this attracts the mosquitoes.

I'm sure you will get lots more tips to help keep all these insects at bay!

Hi Have you actually been to QC? if not is suggest you do then you can see which bits are flat enough for you, mozzies and roaches are no problem if you take sensible precautions. ;)

Problem is most maps don't show the topography.

Plenty of flat areas in Quesada, Rojales, Dona Pepa - all near to each other.

Cochroaches not a massive issue, get the odd one or two - they can sneak in over a couple of months over the summer - generally don't find them much of a problem.

Mosquito's tend to be prevalent where there is a lot of water nearby - for example in Torrevieja, near the salt lakes. We also have a net over our front door grill (and rear) so can keep the door open and get air through - this we put in more for flies during the summer, rather than mosquito's which generally find there are not too many. Over the summer being out in shorts most of the time, think I got bitten twice, but never put anything on to dissuade them.

I find the little geckos more concerning! It's like they ambush me in an evening at a passageway I have to go through! I know I have to learn to live with them and that they are harmless. I just hope they stay outside. Does anyone else have this fear and have a way to avoid them, or is it just me being a baby?

I can understand how you feel - Personally I think seeing a Gecko outside in the street is quite cute but suddenly seeing one inside your house must startle you a bit!
