First of all, I wouldn’t trust a UK car sales company to sort-out the transfer, especially if they haven’t mentioned that you couldn’t legally drive the vehicle in the UK.
For them to do that correctly they would need your NIE and proof of address in Spain. This would need to be a copy of the short-form deeds or a 6+ month rental agreement. Once transfer is complete then a provisional Permisio de Circulation would be issued in your name, valid for around 14 days. This is needed in your possession when driving in Spain. Once it expires then the full version will be required. This will either be sent to your Spanish address or to the Spanish solicitor handling the transfer. You’d also need a current ITV of course, a UK MOT will not be an appropriate alternative.
Try popping into garage and asking them some questions about the transfer, what documents they need from you, what documents are already available and what documents you get from them once the transfer is complete. If their answers don’t tally with what I’ve said above then don’t touch them with a barge pole.
As far as import duty is concerned, it depends on the status if the vehicle in Spain. Technically it sgould have nerd exported, and imported into the UK. If it has then you’ll have to re-import it. If it hasn’t then the process hasn’t been done correctly, which should ring alarm bells.
You should also be checking that there are no outstanding parking or speeding fines registered against the vehicle, or any outstanding Spanish finance. All of which you’d most likely inherit.
It really could be a minefield, and if anything that the car sales company says doesn’t quite ring true then it will most probably come back to bite you, so be very careful.

We looked at buying a Spanish car in the UK & bringing it over, there were far to many potential problems so we didn't. We did however buy an English registered LHD car in the UK & bought that over, we just made sure it hadn't come from Spain orignally so there would be no issues having it registered here.

Thank you for your feedback. Am I right in thinking that buying an English LHD car was far less problematic and the only thing you then had to do, was change the plates and re-register it at the Trafico? Is that all you have to do in that process or are there more hidden hurdles to get over? I have a feeling that Spanish will come up with some obscure form or issue ; like wrong colour or its got four wheels etc lol

We went to a great place in Basingstoke to buy a Spanish registered LHD car to drive to Spain with our cat. They did all the paperwork necessary for us and we had no problems whatsoever. We finished the rest of the paperwork once we got to Spain and a few days ago it passed the equivalent of the MOT (can't remember the name) so we're safe to drive for another year. We're so happy with the car even with a bit of sun damage on the roof. We can really recommend the guys in Basingstoke. They're called www.lhdplace.co.uk Our car had one owner who serviced it regularly and it had low mileage for an old car. She lived in Murcia and came back to live in the UK a month or so before we moved to Spain.

So as per Pete’s earlier post - Who/how did you drive it within the U.K.? I guess trailering it from Basingstoke to the port at Portsmouth isn’t too far.

Is it an expensive process with the paperwork once you got to Spain & was it also expensive for the UK company to do your paperwork there?
