No-one should give a price before seeing the job first, there are far to much variants, ie the condition of the substrate, the shape, the type and size of the tiles.
I ran a small joinery/building business and while you always had a rough square meter price in mind it was still important to view the job before quoting.
Another problem is the customer saying "i'll do all the preparation work, everything will be ready for you"
Whilst in 30 years I only did a handful of "per hour" jobs. If you get a good vibe from the tradesman, it can be cheaper, because if it looks like there might be a problem the tradesman will incorporate thin in his estimate.
Remember cheapest, or most expensive is not necessary the best. Go for recommendations, I never advertised once in 30 years, all jobs came via recommendations.
Good luck, There are good guy's out there.

Thanks for all the excellent advice.
Since buying here 18 years ago and paying top dollar then watching the value plummet and then gradually crawling back slowly,I am naturally loath to spend mega bucks on our house as who knows if we could get it back if we decided to sell. Sometimes you have no choice and just replace worn out parts and it is so tempting to do cosmetic work as it gives such pleasure when finished. On the Torrevieja forum,I was given wonderful advice on where to buy my tiles so you can save money if you are savvy. The area planned for tiling is what we fondly call the galley. It would have been the original side entrance into the house and is now covered with a polycarbonate roof and is used as a utility room. There is one large wall measuring about 7.5’ high and 18’ long, a door into the kitchen so a few tiles to go above it and then, tiles behind the fridge/freezer and washing machine and above the kitchen units which run along the opposite wall. Why would I want to pay nearly €2000 to tile such a room? I had hoped to do the whole job for between €700 and €800. We were to have gone home tomorrow but have extended our stay for another week. Once I go home, I tend to lose the impetus to do anything here and forget about it!
I shall have to wait and see but in the meantime,I thank each and everyone of you for your wise thoughts.
Cheers.

Be very careful who you get .I did some work in a woman’s house ,who had 2 different Spanish tilers in to do her kitchen walls and floors ...Here s the “shortcut they used ...they put a few blobs on the tile and stick it down...looks good but if you tap the tile you hear that horrible hollow sound ,and that gives you a tile which if you drop ,for example a butter knife , the tile will break easily ,as has happened to at leat 3 of her tiles already and more to come ,. That can throw them down rapid , but your heart will be roasted replacingthe broken tiles . I have tiled several times including45 square metres on my own floor my house ,I am a lot slower than these guys ,but got the job done to a very presentable finish ,..DONT throw your money down the drain ,Get someone who knows how to do it correctly,I could do it for you at a reasonable price, but you don’t want someone who is slow! I am slow but thorough . A tip ..when your tiler has put a few tiles up , tap the tile gently with a knife or similar ...you will hear the hollow sound , or the solid sound , you ll know when you hear it ..good luck
