Hi Rob you are not alone looking for work in Quesada. There are hundreds like you it's very difficult to get regular work in Spain ! However if you speak fluent Spanish the world is your oyster!
Good luck with your new life.

Well
I believe in what you do and word of mouth is the biggest advertisement.
If your good and your price is reasonable then people will recommend you without speaking fluent Spanish.
I have been here for some time now and and refused work as word of mouth recommended me for many jobs.
So just do your own thing but be honest, reliable and most of all be realistic with your prices.
Good luck
Johnny

I know a person who was doing some work, police showed up, wanted to see they had the correct licences for what they were doing, they didn't. Luckily for him they made him get the correct licence and all was fine. You need licences for everything. Most don't bother but the council are getting a little wiser
They may even ask for your paperwork if you are legal or not. Hefty fines can be dished out.

A quick thought.... OK, think about "immigrants" moving to the UK..... Do they pay tax? Are they legally entitled to work in the UK? Do they pay into the national insurance system? Do they speak fluent English?

Then think about "professional services".... Do they hold professional qualifications recognised in the UK? Do they know what planning licences to apply for? Do they know how to obtain them? Do they have any public liability insurance?

....Would you employ them?

Back to Spain. There are so many illegal British cowboys over here already and a lot of people have already been ripped off. Still there's quite a few gullible Brit's left, so there's plenty of opportunity..... That said, there are many very reputable British companies & workman working legally within the Spanish system that people have no need to call on the services of illegal chancers. Take a look at the adverts within this forum and assess whether you could offer a similar service. It's not as easy as it looks.

Good luck.

You need a licence in Torrevieja for painting a wall inside your house! I don't know of any English or Spanish that has ever applied for that one but legally they are required. If you re-tile your bathroom you need a licence from the council, you need a licence to fart here. As for you being legal, that means registering with the authorities and paying taxes on what you earn plus paying a monthly fee.
Social Security payments will be taken out of your bank account each month (approx €260 or approx€50 for new automous workers under 30 incrementing gradually over 18 months)

I don't think anyone is saying it's'bad'. It's just the law!

The legal working laws in UK are similar. You have to pay tax and be registered etc.

Most of us get annoyed in UK with illegal workers taking jobs for cash in hand (when we Brits are paying our taxes) so why should Expats of any nationality in Spain do the same and think it's OK.

When the boot is on the other foot and we need a Tradesperson, it's much better to know they are legally working and insured and can , if necessary get all the certification or licensing for the job they are doing for us.

I just recently had electrical work done in the UK and have all the paperwork/certification for this work. If it had been Spain I would want the same, particularly as there are different regulations with electric work (and gas!) in Spain and this is the only way for most of us to know the job has been done properly and safely.
