Burglary Doña Pepa area
Burglary Doña Pepa area

We've been advised by our neighbours that our house was burgled last night. We live off Avenida Antonio Quesada but live in the UK too. They didn’t steal anything but ransacked everywhere. We don’t keep money or valuables in the house but we do have eg stereo, TV etc. They didn’t steal the car keys. As well as being upset, I’m confused. Any thoughts?

I would say that you need to get over A.S.A.P. to make sure nothing is missing and to make a Police Report.
Has the Property been made secure? Perhaps they didn't realise you weren't in Residence and were looking for the usual cards, passports, phones etc that are easy to pass on.

Thanks JanJan. My first thoughts were that they would come back now that they had “cased the joint”. Yours is a more optimistic theory. The insurance company is coming at 5.00pm to make things secure and we’re writing a statement at the moment to give our friends in Spain authority to act for us until we can get over. I always thought our grills were secure but they damaged the wall ripping it out.

Unfortunately Grills do get ripped off and they don't seem to make a noise doing it. If you've got Roller Blinds make sure they can't be lifted up either by fitting locks or a trick we were told years ago to put a peg at the bottom of the blind on the pulley. Try it. Always put your Blinds down if you are out.
We were Burgled when we were back home in the UK and its not a nice feeling. The Administrators just told us we had had a breakin so until we got there we didn't know what to expect. The Thieves took out the locks in the Grill and Door to get in so we invested in a Security Door with many bolts. Not many lived there permently. Good luck with everything.

We were broken in to nearly three weeks ago and live just behind the La Laguna hotel in Dona Pepa. They came in via the Orange grove at the back, lifted the roller blind and forced one of our security windows. They stole an iphone, large TV, money from our wallets/purse (they left the credit/debit cards) and our car which was found damaged in La Linea near the Gibraltar border, all this and we were still sleeping upstairs. We have commissioned someone to fit grills, but the more I hear about them and how unsuccessful they are at stopping thieves getting in, the more I think about upgrading our alarm system and improving the locks on our doors and windows instead. Any thoughts out there?

Sorry to hear this but as far as grills are concerned I believe it's best to think like a burglar...grills on one house not on the other what would you choose to try to get into?
I would not want to be the one with no grills even with all the good security.

I know of at least 2 people who didn't like the look of Grills and guess what, they were Burgled. Also get heavy strong looking ones that are difficult to lift out.

I see advice on here quiet often about fitting security systems, any security system is a deterrent but unfortunately here in Spain the robbers know the risk associated with each security system and how to make them inoperative, the only systems that get a small amount of respect is a legally monitored system with cameras and external censors of which there is four or five companies in this area, but even these have to be kept upgraded in order to keep one step ahead of the robbers for some system on sale here it is possible to purchase a piece of equipment on the internet that will immobilise them from a safe distance in the street. As said on here the company signs play a part as you are communicating with the would be intruder and this alone is a deterrent.
