95 or 98 octane unleaded fuel - Which is the best to use?

95 or 98 octane unleaded fuel - Which is the best to use?

Postby Roach » Thu Sep 06, 2018 12:47 pm

Was wondering if spending the extra on 98 octane would return better performance/fuel economy etc. Or is it just a clever marketing ploy to spend more. Does anyone know for certain any pros/cons between the two fuels?

Definitely 98 is best. If you’re on a budget. Fill with 98 and top up with 95 Do the same thing regularly.

98 oct is most powerful gas but if your car is not designed to use it you will be putting money in the trash.

98 is mainly for high performance engines you are wasting your money by using it if you just have a normal family car as you will gain no extra from it

Other way round I think, Benjy.
There's such a tiny difference between 95 and 98 that it's not worth the price and it doesn't make your engine cleaner. You may get a 2% difference in the mileage but the difference in cost is not worth the price.
When I was in Australia, they had 91 octane which was for cars marked unleaded and 95 was for premium unleaded.

I know that my motorcycle runs more smoothly on 95 than 98. When back in the UK I tried the various branded "super" unleaded fuels, mainly because of the advertising claims. The bike never ran as well as it did (or does) on 95 RON.

Maybe on a higher compression engine it would be worth it, but probably not for the typical runaround car.
