Advice for Ferry travel with dog

Advice for Ferry travel with dog

Postby ScottCummings » Mon Oct 16, 2023 12:35 pm

Hi, we have previously driven down through France/Spain to our holiday home via Le Shuttle with our dog. All worked out fine with that but we are considering the Brittany Portsmouth/Bilbao sailing to cut down on the driving time and maybe a bit more relaxing.

It's not really clear from website what happens to your dog when on-board. They have 4 berth dog friendly cabins but require you to also book a kennel. So i'm wondering if the dog is allowed in the cabin or has to be in a kennel somewhere onboard? Also what about exercising the dog while onboard?

Would be grateful for feedback from anyone who's done the trip.

Also I see that if any friends have a Club Voyage account you can get discount. Would anyone be willing to share that with us?

We are looking to travel down Apr/May next year.

Many thanks, Scott & Sandie

Hi, with regards to travelling with Brittany ferries you can either book a pet friendly cabin and take your dog to the cabin with you , they have a pet excersise area at the end of the corridor and you can take your dog there anytime you want, or book a kennel which are located on deck, you can visit the kennels at any time, we personally prefer the cabin as the kennels are a bit noisy with dogs constantly barking (as I think it’s strange for them) it’s a good way to travel. I hope this is helpful.

You have to have a muzzle on your dog to board the boat. Don't think you can visit dogs in kennels after midnight till 6 in the morning.

Pet cabins get booked up very quickly. If you're looking to do this route I would book as soon as possible.

Book the dog friendky cabin immediately. The kennels are a nightmare, big dogs below and little ones above and constant barking. Unfortunately both our little ones have passed now, but at the timr they were oetrified and we dpent half the night holding them . They are not allowed in the rest of the ship. The exercise place is on deck ten and comes with a hosepipe to clean down after your dog. Our number is SO1BO2 if you woukd like to use it you are welcome

Def recommend the pet friendly cabins , it is so much better . The dogs are more relaxed. We did the kennels once but my dogs hated them and we spent most of the voyage on the pet deck with them rather than put them bk in the kennels as they were very scared with other dogs barking . Probably just that my pooches have been too pampered lol . Like mentioned before the pet cabins get booked up very quickly so it’s better to ring direct and speak to someone to book as they can let you know when there is availability . ( obviously if you are not restricted to when you can go )

Thanks all for your replies. As it happens we missed the "boat" this time and all pet friendly cabins on all routes were booked for this times we needed. Will have to get organised for next time. Thank you
