As said above,Great Britain was formed in 1707 by the treaty of union when Scotland was bankrupt after the Darien Project failed and there was no money in the country.England bought up the debt to the chagrin of some Scots and,let's be honest,we have been paying since.I am happy for this to continue because Scotland can't survive independently without it.The EU will be no help.For anybody interested,there is still a Puerto Escocia near Panama to this day.

I would be very interested to find out where your unemployment figures are coming from. Was it the Dandy or the Beano because they bear no resemblance to the official figure for those aged 16 to 64 year olds.

For the record Scotland never come running to England. For England, there was concern that if it didn't unite with Scotland, the country might side against England with France in the War of the Spanish Succession. So in 1707, England agreed to give Scotland money to pay off its debts, and both countries' parliaments passed the Acts of Union to become one nation.
