Cataract surgery

Cataract surgery

Postby angiebabes » Fri Apr 07, 2023 8:32 am

Good morning
My Husband is diabetic and takes insulin. Since his last eye digital photography at the Acequion Health Centre last year, his eyesight has deteriorated.
What are his options to get his cataract surgery , to help with his lifestyle.
Doctor appointment, eye test, or pay private . If so where, and costs if possible.
Any help would be appreciated. Thankyou

If he has cataracts, the ophthalmologist would give him a note to take to the medical centre. Reception would use that to make an appointment with a specialist at the hospital without you needing a doctor. He may go to the eye clinic in Torrevieja town or direct to the specialist at Torrevieja hospital.

My wife had both done at the hospital. From getting a note at the opticians, seeing various specialists and having both eyes treated for cataracts took almost exactly a year and that included a mandatory 3 month wait between the first and second operation. This was during the covid pandemic and the hospital sent apologies for the long wait due to the pandemic. Normal time is 5 months.

Several places do cataract surgery including Quiron hospital and the cost for both eyes would have been around 5,000 euro. Some seem to charge about 3,500 per eye but a discount for two

Of course, this is if he has cataracts. Diabetic retinopathy should have picked this up but it could be something else such as macular degeneration. In either case, they should have given him a diagnosis sheet for taking to the medical centre.

Torrevieja hospital has been working extremely hard to clear the backlog due to covid and are carrying out surgery into the late evening and on Saturdays. My wife's last intervention was at 8:30 in the evening and there were still 2 waiting. Excellent treatment and the only cost was about 75 euro for certain drops and wipes which aren't available on prescription.

Great information as usual Marcliff, thanks.

I had already waited 5 months for an appointment with a referral from the doctor, but an excellent optician at Specsavers in Torrevieja gave me a letter to take to the hospital and I've now got an appointment in 2 months time (it's a potentially serious eye condition, not a cateract). It's not quick but, once I've been seen, maybe it'll be quicker.

I had cataract operations in 2021 at Quiron with Mr Fernadez. Excellent. I had them done a month apart costing €2000 each. Well worth it. I still see Mr Fernadez for check up at no extra cost.
