Decision time.. Move on - Keep?

Decision time.. Move on - Keep?

Postby Philipb1407 » Tue Nov 17, 2020 1:08 pm

As we go into the second lock down in the uk, travel has become near on impossible and it’s now 9 months since we used our villa, do we bite the bullet, sell up and buy a property back in old blighty, or do we hang on hoping that things improve. Certainly it does not cost a lot of money to run a villa in Spain, if you bought it outright, there’s no gas being used, the electric to run the pool is cheap enough as is the pool cleaner and water bills, the rates/property tax and bins are not excessive either.
But 300k investment in a villa you can no longer use, is worrying and the word in the UK is this could be ongoing for the whole of 2021 and 2022, that’s three years loss of use. Is it worth it? House prices are dropping in many coastal resorts in the UK, so what do we do? It is a dilemma, Personally I love my time in quesada, we had hoped to be back by now but yet another lockdown scuppers our plans. Christmas in freezing cold England is no longer my idea of fun, not when I could be fed and watered by them great restaurants in and around Quesada, while enjoying blue sky day after day in Spain.. well let’s see how things progress, maybe a 3” needle pumping a vaccine our my arms will do the trick

Hi Phillip

The vaccine process seems to be moving quite quickly, so hopefully things may change during 2021. (I know not everyone wants to be vaccinated).

We came out to our villa in October and didn’t venture very far at all for the first 14 days. Luckily the weather was glorious so we were able to enjoy sitting in the garden. We are here for 3 months. We too have a place in Quesada. So it is possible to come over and enjoy your villa once lockdown ends. In theory it should be safer to fly now that everyone has to provide a negative covid test, albeit at a fairly high cost. It is approx 40 euros here to get a test , whereas Boots are charging £120.

We have a home on the South Coast in Hillhead nr Lee on Solent. The prices are still going crazy. One of my friends was due to exchange this week, her buyers pulled out and the Estate Agent has recommended putting it back on for 10k more. I’m not saying it’s the same in every area, but you mentioned the South Coast.

You said you love your villa - write a list of pros and cons and I bet the pros come out tops! Good Luck with whatever you decide,

Are those €40 tests the "proper" PCR ones required under this legislation though? We were due to return to Denmark for xmas and looking at the PCR tests available to return to Spain, noted they are the equivalent of £300 per person.

Hillhead - small world. I grew up just down the road from there and my first girlfriend lived a few doors down from the Osborne View. Her dad ran the veterinary clinic just up by my old school, Meoncross.

Back on topic, I am a bit miffed by it all as I was a regular commuter rather than a winter migrant. I might be a week or two in Quesada, and back and forward to the UK once or twice a month. Of course this type of travel is impossible and might be for some time. For those who can spend a longer tranche of time in Spain then its not so bad - but then from January you have to consider the 90 day limit kin any 180 days so these longer winter migrants will have to keep an eye on that also.

The problem is Spanish property rarely appreciates (or by much) so if the house isn't being used, it really is just wasted capital tied up doing nothing but costing you to maintain/taxes etc. If the travel situation doesn't resolve itself once Covid dies down a little, I will have difficulty doing short visits and if that were the case, I too would consider selling.

I believe you will find many are in process of trying to sell, but market is on way down again, so may be best to hang on till at least travel is in a better position.

Hang in there, there's plenty of light at the end of this particular tunnel.

We've been more fortunate, having gotten out twice over the summer and are now just waiting for things to calm down again before popping back over.

Stay positive, we'll beat this thing

i am in the same situation but have decided to ride it out. i haven't been to our villa since beginning of march when all this kicked off and i also have a car parked in long term parking at the airport. i am more worried about someone breaking in and living in our place than anything else because of the rumours flying around.
as soon as I am allowed to come to spain and not self isolate on return, i will be there to check the place out.
stay safe guys and try to have a good christmas, might even be able to get a burger king for christmas dinner :D
