Does anyone know of any reputable company that does health insurance for a short period of time. As part of my NLV application last year, I had to take out private health insurance as a prerequisite to coming to Spain (which was quite expensive, over 2100€ for my wife and I) but the company I joined, only do an annual policy. I am able to officially retire in December this year and can then join the Spanish health system. Can someone suggest something? Thank you.

Doubt very much you’ll find anything less than a 12 month policy. Many people here continue with private health insurance even when they qualify for Spanish state health care.
Just over €2,000 for both of you doesn’t seem that expensive to be honest and given some of the recent reports regarding Torrevieja hospital, you might want to consider having private cover for at least your first full year.
Alternatively, don’t bother with the private insurance and just pay as you go privately if you need any treatment.

If you've been resident (on the padron) for 12 months you may be eligible to join the Convenio especial for a monthly fee. Alternatively, self insure until you get your S1 registered.
